Late last year we learnt that BMW and Toyota are to work more closely to share technology and expertise as the car industry enters a period of consolidation and partnership to try and keep R&D costs under control, and make their products more cost-effective. The sports car maker has gone on the attack, with tough new European Union guidelines on carbon emissions looming. Brussels has already announced it would like the average new car's emissions to total 130g/km of CO2 by 2012, and is now haggling with the industry about implementing the target.
