I have over 40 years experience as a product engineer in automotive and aerospace applications.  I currently work part time as an international manufacturing problem solver.  I've done projects all over the world including the USA, Canada, Mexico, Germany, Sweden, Hungary, Russia, and South Korea for big name companies like GM, Ford, Chrysler, VW, Rolls-Royce, Saab, GAZ, Johnson Controls, and LG Electronics.

I designed these covers using the latest 3D modeling software.  And to make sure they fit perfect, I had the stake pocket holes laser scanned to create a perfect model of the hole.  I made dozens of prototypes on a 3D printer and tested them.  Once I was satisfied that the design was right, I had a master mold builder here in Indiana create a plastic injection mold to produce the parts.  And finally these covers are made right here in Indiana.

I have been testing prototype parts for over a year with no issues at all.  These covers are injected molded, so they're much stronger than the 3D printed parts.  One of our prototype testers sold his truck and swears that the stake pocket covers made the sale because the buyer loved the covers.  It probably saved him over $1000 versus a trade in.  That's not bad for a $20 investment.

We have found that due to a variation in the material GM uses on the top rail protectors, the stake pocket hole might stretch slightly and allow a cover to back out.  (We have found 1 cover out of 824 that backed out.)  So, make sure the stake pocket holes are clean and dry before you install the covers.  You shouldn't need to, but if you want, you can apply silicone to the holes before the covers are installed just to make sure they don't back out.  That way they can still be removed later if you wish.

Also, we have received a report from one customer that had a bed cover installed.  The shop had installed the two rearward clamps for the bed cover through the stake pocket holes over the plastic and distorted the holes.  Make sure these clamps are under the plastic so they don't distort the stake pocket holes.

NOTE: These do not fit the small size pickups.  They fit only the GM full size pickups (Silverado and Sierra) for 2014, 2015, and 2016.

Concept Car of the Week: Peugeot Proxima (1986)

Fri, 25 Apr 2014

Presented at the 1986 Paris Motor Show, the Proxima concept was the ultimate vision of '80s futurism, both in terms of its design and engineering. To assert its blue-sky vision, Peugeot named its creation after Proxima Centauri, the closest star to the sun. The exterior design was directed by GĂ©rard Welter, and featured a long wheelbase, mid-mounted engine and very small overhangs, putting the accent on power and performance.
