STOP!
The 1985-87 Buick Regal Grand Nationals and T Types came equipped with a rather unique brake system, "The Powermaster".
This was a "hybrid" hydraulic/electric booster system, it seemed like a good idea at the time but it was problematic from its inception.
1988 there was a pressure switch recall. There were strange reports of sudden failures and/or fade. Local shops messing them up unaware they had special maintenance requirements.
Fuse failures, motor failures, accumulator failures, switch failures, fluid leakage.....
Now that these units are 29 years old, the OEM replacement parts are gone. Repair shops have NO idea how to work on them.
It is getting harder to buy rebuilt units, and if you do manage to buy a rebuilt unit, it will still be of questionable performance, costing easily over $750.
If do happen to own a rebuilt powermaster unit that breaks the warranty often requires that the unit to be sent in and be repaired, because of the lack of cores and "out of stock" status of the units; that can take weeks.
Individual repair parts like: a new accumulator cost over $200, pressure switch $150, electric motors not available. And since the original design was flawed, you are still left with a ticking time bomb of a brake booster!
Many Turbo Regal owners have followed GM's lead and installed a vacuum brake system, just like the 1989 20th Anniversary Pontiac Trans Am equipped with a vacuum brake unit right along side the powerful (LC2) 3.8 turbo GN engine. Even the new 2016 Regal GS Turbo has a vacuum brake system.Let's face it, the Powermaster was a failed GM experiment.
If you wish to keep your car original.... pull the Powermaster out, and put it in a box, and you will help preserve the front end body parts of your precious automobile. And install a reliable vacuum unit that is easy to service, more economical, and with a service life that is measured in decades. This is one of those upgrades that allows you to enjoy driving the car without having that nagging feeling every time you depress the brake pedal. Drive your car long distances with confidence, no being stranded with an unservicable system, as the vacuum system is understood to almost every repair shop in the world, not so with the powermaster.
This kit includes:
Painted vacuum brake pedal.
100% NEW Master cylinder and reservoir (in the proper bore size).
Re-manufactured Cardone 9 inch Dual diaphragm booster.
30 inches of hose and a black plastic tee.
NEWLY ADDED: AC Delco booster to firewall gasket. (See picture)
New rubber brake pad.
Kit is ready to install and key parts are PAINTED with a solvent resistant engine paint.
2 year warranty on master cylinder, booster for original purchaser.
NO Core deposit, you keep your old unit.
Peace of mind and enjoyment when you take your car for a ride.
This kit is the best deal of all the others, most kits are not painted, others require you to drill a hole, or weld a pin the original pedal(!). It is a lot faster and easier to swap out pedals than to remove one; have it worked on, and then re-install.
Don't be fooled by the other more expensive kits with a "new" brake booster. A remanufactured unit just uses the original GM external metal shells and linkage all new seals and diaphragm are installed. Keeps the factory original fitment and rod length with no guess work.
Only top quality NEW master cylinders in the correct bore size are sold in the kit; other sellers offer the fully re-manufactured master cylinders (cheap) from Cardone, and you may get either the larger or smaller (24mm or 36mm) piston bore.
I select the proper sized bore for its stopping power, and correct line pressure. You may have heard of some people doing a vacuum conversion and not being happy with the results, well that is due to the improper piston bore size..
NOTE: Shipped FedEX ground. Fully insured, with signature required, if you do not want a signature delivery contact me, but if the item goes missing Fed Ex denies claims if tracking shows it was left at the door.
Any warranty issues are rectified as quickly as possible.
In today's busy world only about 50% of people bother to leave feedback but you can look at my "Feedback left for others" since I always leave feedback upon shipping, to see how many of these items I sell. I figure no complaints = good feedback....
Installation tips:
Should be installed by a competent mechanic.
Master cylinder should be bench bled before installation.
Proper bleeding procedure for all four corners of the car needs to be performed.
Suggest but not required to upgrade to braided brake lines or at minimum new brake hoses. Doing so enhances brake performance and pedal feel.
Quality brake pads like Hawks brand can go a long way in reducing stopping distances.
For cams that create low vacuum conditions a vacuum canister can be installed to assist with vacuum reserve.
Driver seat can be removed to help ease removal and installation of brake pedal, that takes about 15 minutes and saves time and back aches in the long run.
Thank you for looking, I invite all questions, and may the Lord Bless you abundantly.
