The last outing for Top Gear was the slightly third-rate outing to India for the Christmas Special, but the latest series of Top Gear – Series 18, starting on Sunday January 29th – looks far more promising, certainly if the trailer and photos we’ve got to preview series 18 are anything to go by.

Parked alongside the Ferrari F1 car, it looked more purposeful than we expected – though all the motor show cars were, tellingly, displayed roof down. Once you’ve turned your brand from cheap and cheerful to mainstream and credible, the route to go is to mix in some overtly sporty models and start to nudge in to premium territory too.
