The CSC is mounted inside the bell housing where the release bearing retainer is normally attached. This unique design offers the following benefits: Elimination of the clutch fork and related hardware, precise release bearing travel with better alignment geometry, and closer fit to the transmission which increases flexibility in passenger compartment design. A CSS uses a large coil spring to maintain constant contact between the bearing face and diaphragm spring fingers. Therefore, no “lost travel” is required between the release bearing and diaphragm spring before the clutch pressure plate begins to disengage. Many newer style plastic body CSC designs include plastic shipping straps attached to the plastic bushing and to the body. These straps compress the overall length of the unit during installation, which means the pushrod does not need to be compressed in order to clear the release lever. If the hydraulic system has been properly bled, the straps will break when the first stroke of the clutch pedal moves the pushrod forward.

Concentric Slave Cylinders (CSCs)

Many vehicles are now fitted with a concentric slave cylinder (CSC) as opposed to the conventional release fork and bearing. The conventional method of operation of the clutch is by cable or hydraulic actuation of a release fork, this disengages the clutch via a release bearing. CSC release bearings enable a lighter clutch pedal effort with better take-up, allowing vehicle manufacturers to dispense of the release fork, guide and bearing. The CSC is mounted inside the gearbox bell-housing and is usually made from either modern thermo-plastics or aluminum, with intricate rubber seals and chambers within. When a clutch is replaced it is essential that the CSC is also replaced at the same time. After many clutch actuations the rubber seals become worn and the operating position within the chamber of the CSC changes, which means the worn internal components are no longer aligned. It is imperative that the rubber seals inside CSCs are of the highest quality to ensure there is no loss of hydraulic fluid. If fluid is allowed to pass through the seals it will contaminate the friction material on the disc, which will result in clutch failure.

The CSC must not be compressed prior to fitment; this will damage the rubber seals as they are not fully lubricated.

Important Note: This is the Hydraulic Throw-out Bearing / Concentric Slave Cylinder (CSC) assembly found inside the bellhousing of the transmission.

These are found on all manual Z's and G's equipped with the HR engine.

Clutch Release - Concentric hydraulic throwout bearingThis system is typically used with the Tremec and sometimes the T-5.  It solves the mismatch problem of bell housing and throwout lever heights.

Installation

Concentric hydraulic throwout slave cylinders are sensitive to proper setup.  We typically use Weber brand, and have found them to be reliable if setup correctly.  When you do your car, it is essential to follow the installation guidelines.  Pictures and procedures shown here are particular to Weber - yours may be different.  Always read and follow the instructions for your setup.

Weber brand cylinders (and most others) have no system to keep the "piston" from being pushed too far out of the cylinder - and puking fluid all over the floor.  The ERA requires a pedal stop so that the master cylinder stroke is limited.

Adjusting the Bearing/Clutch Clearance

"Permantly" install all the clutch components onto the flywheel, using an alignment tool for the driven disc.
Install the bell housing.
Using a straight-edge across the bell housing opening, measure the height of the fingers below the opening.
Make sure that the cylinder piston is pushed all the way into the housing.  Adjust the height of the bearing on the transmission by screwing the threaded adjusting sleeve in or out of the slave cylinder so that when the transmission is installed, there will be the indicated clearance.
After the transmission is installed permantly, recheck the clearance and connect the pressure hose to the clutch master cylinder.
Attach the bleed hose to the bellhousing flange at a conveniently accessible location.

Jaguar F-Type stars in Lana Del Rey’s Burning Desire video

Thu, 14 Feb 2013

The new Jaguar F-Type has a starring role in the new Burning Desire video from Lana Del Rey, Jaguar’s F-Type ‘Ambassador’. Last summer, as the new Jaguar F-Type stared to garner headlines, Jaguar announced that they were signing up the talented Lana Del Rey to help promote the new F-Type, imbuing their new sports car with a bit of cool in the process. And Ms Del Rey was a clever choice; just like the F-Type she manages to be very ‘now’ yet still manages to evoke the cool of the past without relying on that to define herself.

Official: Aston Martin Cygnet axed – fewer than 150 sold

Tue, 08 Oct 2013

Sir Stirling Moss was one of fewer than 150 Aston Martin Cygnet buyers Last month we reported that Aston Martin appeared to have axed their take on a supermini – the Aston Martin Cygnet – after just a couple of years. Now that news seems to be official after Reuters spoke to an Aston Martin source who also said the Cygnet sold so poorly that fewer than 150 were sold. That must make the Cygnet one of the poorest performing cars in any company’s sales history, especially as that fewer than 150 total was supposed to be 4,000 a year.
