Berg examines the BMW 325is, with its new, free-revving, 2.5-liter inline six-cylinder, making BMW’s small sedan an even more desirable ride. Compared with the more expensive Porsche 944 and Acura Legend, the BMW gets Berg’s nod of approval.

Every car maker wanting to boast about the ground-effect prowess of their cars will claim they could – in the right circumstances – drive upside down on the roof of a tunnel. But to the best of our knowledge it’s never actually been done. Clarkson had a bash in a Twingo in Belfast in the last series of Top Gear, and every F1 team will claim their cars can manage it.

A 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta sold overnight for a record $38,115,000 (£22,528,626) at the prestigious Bonhams Quail Lodge Auction held during Monterey Car Week. At a stroke, the Ferrari has become the most valuable car in the world, overtaking the 1954 Mercedes W196 R F1 Racer which sold for $30m at an auction at the 2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed. Tellingly, seven of the top 10 most expensive cars ever sold at auction were Ferraris (see our list below).
