iDatalink Maestro ADS-MRR Interface Module

Connect a new stereo and retain the steering wheel audio controls and factory amps in select 2006-up Ford, GM, Chrysler, and VW vehicles

iDatalink's Maestro ADS-MRR module, along with the correct interface harness for your vehicle, allows you to install a new car stereo in select late-model Ford, GM, Chrysler, or Volkswagen vehicles while retaining your factory steering wheel audio controls and the use of your factory amplifier, if present.

Here's how it works

First, you connect the Maestro to your Windows-based computer (not compatible with Mac) using the included USB cable, visitwww.idatalink.com/maestro, and follow the instructions. Once the unit has been "flashed," it's ready to go. Next, you'll either solder or crimp the vehicle-specific Maestro harness

Important Note: You will also need an additional Maestro vehicle-specific wiring harness that connects your new receiver to the ADS-MRR module and your vehicle's wiring.

Retain steering wheel audio controls, too

The ADS-MRR module also allows you to use your factory steering wheel audio controls with your new receiver. Using the intuitive web programming interface, each factory button can be assigned a specific radio function. Better yet, you can also assign a secondary "press and hold" radio function to each factory button, effectively doubling what can be controlled.

Keeping your factory features with an iDatalink-ready car stereo

If you're buying a compatible Kenwood, Pioneer, or Alpine receiver, you'll enjoy the outstanding performance of your receiver, plus seamless touchscreen control over most of the factory features in select GM, Ford, Chrysler, or Volkswagen vehicles (see Details for specific functions and installation notes).

  • Ford: You'll keep your SYNC® system, including the factory Bluetooth, satellite radio (in select vehicles, see Details), steering wheel audio controls, and other great features.
  • GM: You'll retain the use of OnStar® system, along with your steering wheel audio controls, your factory amp, and safety warning chimes.
  • Chrysler: You'll retain the use of the Uconnect® system (including voice command), along with your steering wheel audio controls and factory amp.
  • Volkswagen: You'll retain your VW's Bluetooth, the factory digital amplifier and fader, plus VW's media device interface. Select Kenwood receivers allow you to display navigation info on your VW's multi-function screen.

Product Highlights:

  • allows installation of a new car stereo in select 2006-up Ford, Chrysler, GM, and VW vehicles
  • works with required vehicle-specific harness (sold separately) to retain factory steering wheel audio controls, retain the factory amp if present, and integrate all car stereo connections
  • retains info gauges, satellite radio (in select vehicles), and Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) in select vehicles when used with select Kenwood and Alpine navigation receivers
  • dimensions: 4-1/8"W x 3/4"H x 2-7/8"D
  • warranty: 1 year

General Features

Web-Programmable Radio Replacement Solution: The iDatalink Maestro RR (ADS-MRR) is part of a web-programmable solution that allows you to replace the factory radio in many 2006-up Ford/Lincoln/Mercury, GM, Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep, and Volkswagen vehicles (requires additional vehicle specific harness). Retained features will vary by vehicle and aftermarket head unit.

Flashing the Module: The iDatalink Maestro RR (ADS-MRR) will need to be loaded with correct firmware before installation. The included USB cable plugs into your PC and allows you to "flash" the Maestro RR with the appropriate firmware to prepare it for installation. Just visit iDatalink's Weblink site, and follow the instructions. System Requirements for Weblink 6.0 include:

  • Windows 2000 (SP4), XP (SP2), Vista, and 7
  • Administrative rights on your PC
  • Internet Explorer 7.0 or greater (excluding 64-bit version)
  • Available USB port
Note: iDatalink Maestro RR is not compatible with a Mac.

Aftermarket Radio Compatibility: The iDatalink Maestro RR (ADS-MRR) is compatible with a wide variety of aftermarket radios. Features will vary by vehicle and type of head unit.

  • Head Units w/ iDatalink Serial Port: The iDatalink Maestro RR (ADS-MRR) is fully compatible select Kenwood, Alpine, and Pioneer receivers which feature a iDatalink serial port. These radios allow you to retain Ford Sync, GM Satellite Radio/Digital Fader, and Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep U-Connect factory features. Compatible Kenwood and Alpine head units also add Extra features, such as selectable gauges and vehicle information. The following aftermarket head units feature iDatalink's serial port.
    • Kenwood: 2012-up DNX/DNN/DDX01/DDX02-series receivers; for interfacing the Maestro RR with a Kenwood 2012 DNX-series navigation head unit, you'll want to add the iDatalink Maestro ADS-HRN(SX)-ALL01 cable sold separately)
    • Alpine: INE-W957HD/X008/X009), and 2014-up
    • Pioneer: 2014-up AVIC-NEX series and 2015 AVH-X series receivers via a firmware update,
  • Non-Serial Port Radios: The ADS-MRR is also compatible with non-serial port radios from Kenwood, Advent, Alpine, Axxera (Dual), Blaupunkt, Boyo, Clarion, Eclipse, Jensen, JVC, Pioneer, and Sony.

Navigation Outputs: The ADS-MRR provides a VSS (vehicle speed sense), Foot Brake, Parking Brake, and a Reverse Light output to make installing practically any aftermarket navigation radio simpler and less time consuming in select Ford/Lincoln/Mercury, GM, Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep, and Volkswagen vehicles.

Steering Wheel Controls: The iDatalink Maestro RR also lets you retain your Ford/Lincoln/Mercury, GM, Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep, and Volkswagen vehicle's OEM steering wheel controls when replacing the factory radio with an aftermarket stereo that offers a SWC input. In addition to retaining the original steering wheel functions, you can assign secondary press & hold features to the buttons of your choice. There is only one wire that will have to be spliced when installing this interface in your compatible Ford/Lincoln/Mercury vehicle. However, if the vehicle was equipped with factory navigation, there will be no extra SWC wires to connect in the vehicle. You will not have to splice any wires to get SWC functionality in a compatible GM, Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep, or Volkswagen vehicle.

Note: Steering wheel controls work with the following brands - Advent, Alpine, Axxera (Dual), Blaupunkt, Boyo, Clarion, Dual, Eclipse, Jensen, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, and Sony. Other brands are not supported.

Amp Turn-On Lead: The ADS-MRR provides an amp turn-on lead to turn on any factory amps when installing virtually any aftermarket head unit. Both balance & fade control are retained in many vehicles with analog amplifier systems. 2013-up DNN/DNX-series, Alpine INE-W957HD/X008/X009, or 2014-up Pioneer AVIC-NEX series head units also support fading in vehicles with digital amplifier systems.

Note: If you are installing an aftermarket head unit that does not feature an iDatalink serial port, then you will not be able to fade in vehicles with digital amplifier systems. In this case, adjust the factory amplifier's fader prior to installation of the new aftermarket head unit.

Extra Features: When installing a compatible Kenwood 2013-up DNX/DNN-series receiver or Alpine INE-W957HD/X008/X009 head unit, the iDatalink Maestro RR offers extra features such as User Selectable Gauges, Vehicle Info (Tire Pressure/Battery Voltage/Check Engine Codes/Door Ajar Warning), and Visual Park Assist for select Ford/Lincoln/Mercury, GM, Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep, and Volkswagen vehicles.

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology say a new battery design for electric vehicles could be a lightweight and inexpensive alternative. The goal for the team's three-year project, launched in September 2010, is to have a functioning prototype ready to be engineered as a replacement for existing electric-car batteries. At this point in the project, the prototype uses a “semi-solid flow” to separate the two functions of a battery--storing energy and discharging it when needed--into separate physical structures.

Video: Jaguar XF clay model gets axed

Thu, 07 Jun 2012

Jaguar recently gave a trio of clay modelers the task of deconstructing the original model of their carefully and lovingly sculpted XF sedan by handing them axes and sledgehammers in front of a camera crew. The modelers – dressed in black t-shirts and jeans – are shown taking apart the model piece by piece, perhaps taking out their frustration with designers who feel the need to get a little too hands-on with their artisan handiwork. Perhaps some other car manufacturers could using this as inspiration to destroy some of their cars, maybe – naming no names – before reaching production.
