The EX30d gets the same diesel engine as the FX30d, namely a 3.0 litre V6 with graphite iron block (all the better for saving weight and adding smoothness) delivering 235bhp which – in the smaller EX30d – is sufficient to get to 60mph in 7.7 seconds and return 33.2mpg. Emissions are 227g/km.

Far from seeking to produce 57 varieties of any particular new Ford model, the two firms are exploring the use of tomato fibre to develop a sustainable composite materials for use in vehicle manufacturing. For example, boffins believe that dried tomato skins could become the wiring brackets in future Ford vehicles or the storage bin a customer uses to hold coins and other small objects.
