Driven: BMW i8
Thu, 17 Jul 2014When BMW unveiled the Vision EfficientDynamics concept at the 2009 Frankfurt motor show, we wrote: "for our money, it's the first time a major carmaker has really attempted to communicate ‘green' technology in an aesthetic sense." Fast-forward five years and we've swapped the show halls of the IAA for a beauty spot on the north-west coast of Scotland. And, while the car's name has changed to i8, our sentiment towards this genre- and era-defining car remains. Admittedly the production car's design execution hasn't received the universal praise of its concept forebears, but, on a remote outpost of the British Isles, a Protonic Blue i8 couldn't look more exotic.
Vauxhall Astra & Astra Sports Tourer get BiTurbo diesel
Wed, 01 Aug 2012Vauxhall has decided to bolt their BiTurbo diesel engine in to the Astra Hatch and the Astra Sports Tourer. Vauxhall revealed last month that the Astra GTC was getting the frugal but lively 2.0 litre CDTi BiTurbo engine, offering a tempting combination of 53mpg official economy and sub 8 second 0-62mph performance. With levels of economy unthinkable just a few years ago combined with performance a hot hatch would have been proud of, the BiTurbo Astra GTC is a clever combination.
2010 Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR-X rolls into production in Detroit
Tue, 30 Mar 2010One of the most sinister snakes to slither out of the Dodge Viper plant in Detroit rolled off the assembly line on Tuesday as Chrysler simultaneously marks the final year of production for the current generation of its iconic supercar and launches a new race series. The first 2010 Viper SRT10 ACR-X was completed at the Connor Avenue plant, also known as the “Snake Pit” in the Motor City. It's a track-only car designed for road-racing enthusiasts, and it melds top performance parts from the Viper ACR (street legal) and the Viper Competition Coupe (far from it).
