Ken Maely Enterprises Seat Base
Purchased from the estate of Ken "The Shoe Man" Maely after his passing in 2003, fiberglass seat base, 12" long x 7" at its widest x 4.5" at its tallest; rear mount holes 4.25" apart. This is a skirted design as used on speedway bikes but could also look cool on a bobber. Note: As each seat was handmade, all are a little different when it comes to the inherent color splotches that result from the 'glassing process; all dimensions are identical, though. Ken Maely (1925-2003) was a flat-track and speedway racer in the late 1930s and ’40s who grew tired of constantly replacing his metal sliding shoes. Made from the cut-off ends of junkyard car bumpers, they would only last a few weeks. Maely, ever the inventor, crafted one from bandsaw blades that was lighter and far more durable. Soon other riders asked for their own and starting in 1950 he went into business as Maely Enterprises, providing steel shoes to virtually every AMA champion for the next five decades as well as thousands of fair-circuit amateurs. Maely also made seats & fender pads, fiberglass gas tanks, even complete speedway frames. A fixture in the AMA pits or later at his farm/training track in Corona, California, “The Shoe Man” was inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame in 1999.
