-1988 Federal/USA Stevens Esprit & Australian 1989 Turbo vehicles equipped w/Citroen transaxle.

QDF13H is a direct replacement for the standard "open differential". Unlike a conventional plate-style limited slip differential, the Quaife Automatic Torque Biasing Helical LSD differential relies on gears rather than clutch plates for its operation. That means it is much smoother in operation. The Quaife ATB Helical LSD differential never locks harshly with a set pre-load of wheel slip across the driven axle, like a conventional LSD. Rather, it automatically biases the torque away from the spinning wheel across the axle, to a constantly varying degree, and never locks. It is proven in circuit and drag racing, rallying and road use, and is produced from Corus steel billets, and is CAD designed and CNC machined, then inspected to ISO 9002 standards.

As a direct replacement for the Lotus Esprit open differential, the Quaife ATB Helical LSD differential dramatically transforms your car’s performance. Unlike a conventional plate-style limited slip differential, the Quaife ATB HLSD differential relies on helical worm gears rather than clutch plates for its operation. That means it is much smoother in operation and almost entirely eliminates the internal shock transfer to the CWP.

WHY should you consider buying ATB LSD?

The Citroen box was designed for 150 ft-lbs of torque. Lotus already pushed it to the limit, going up to 210 ft-lbs. At 250 ft-lbs plus, the rear tires may break loose, hop over ripples or "stutter bumps" under hard acceleration in 1st and 2nd gear. Between transaxle case flex and these shock loads you'll quickly break down the case hardened gear surfaces on your ring and pinion (CWP) until "BANG", and you're missing several teeth!.
Why ATB LSD?

HLSD differential never locks harshly with a set pre-load of wheel slip across the driven axle, like conventional LSD. Rather, it automatically biases the torque away from the spinning wheel across the axle, to a constantly varying degree, and never locks.  It has many benefits over a standard open differential, including maximizing traction and minimizing wheel spin, eliminating torque steer (compared to conventional LSD units), and a maintenance-free design which retains the standard oil lubrication.

C35 (Citroen SM) transaxle was used on all Maserati Merak and Lotus Esprit models from 1975 to 1988. The Quaife Differential powers both drive wheels under all conditions, instead of just one. With an ordinary "open" differential, (standard on all Esprits, except Sport 300), a lot of precious power is wasted during wheel spin under acceleration. This happens because the open differential shifts power to the wheel with less grip (along the path of least resistance).

The Quaife, however, does just the opposite. It senses which wheel has the better grip, and biases the power to that wheel. It does this smoothly and constantly, and without ever completely removing power from the other wheel. In drag-race style, straight-line acceleration runs, this results in a close to ideal 50/50 power split to both drive wheels, resulting in essentially twice the grip of an ordinary differential (they don't call open differentials "peg legs" for nothing).

In cornering, while accelerating out of a turn, the Quaife biases power to the outside wheel, reducing inside-wheel spin. This allows the driver to begin accelerating earlier, exiting the corner at a higher speed.

The Quaife Differential provides constant and infinitely variable drive. Power is transferred automatically without the use of normal friction pads or plates seen in other limited-slip designs.

The Quaife unique design offers maximum traction, improves handling and steering, and puts the power where it is needed most. It offers a definite advantage whether on the track or on the street.

The Quaife is extremely strong and durable and since the Quaife is gear operated, it has no plates or clutches that can wear out and need costly replacement.

The Quaife is great for street performance or racing. Racers don't have to put up with locking mechanisms or spools that tear the steering wheel out of their hands when cornering. This differential is proven in circuit and drag racing, rallying and road use.

Quaife ATB Helical LSD differentials are made in UK and used by Ford, General Motors and Daimler-Chrysler as original equipment.

In order to avoid expensive break downs, or rather expensive conversion to the Renault UN-1 gearbox (outboard brakes!), some Lotus enthusiasts successfully opted for  Cryogenic Treatment of the crown wheel  & pinion (CWP) combined with installation of the QUAIFE ATB Helical LSD Differential instead. Due to v tight tolerances this LSD significantly reduces internal shock prolonging CWP longevity.

No special friction modifiers are required for proper use, and standard GL-4 gear oil is the fluid of choice with Quaife ATB LSD.

ADDITIONAL CRITICAL POINT TO CONSIDER:

By installing QDF13H into the Citroen transaxle, you will reduce a possibility of catastrophic failure of the Crown Wheel/Pinion (CWP) teeth  when one of the wheels momentarily looses its contact with the pavement. Thanks to the absence of an internal slack and automatic "unloading" of the spinning wheel, the internal gear shock transferred to the CWP is minimised. Used Citroen CWP cost much more than QDF13H and are difficult to get! New CWP-s are "unobtanium".

TESTIMONIALS:

Most of the time, even in non-track use, the Quaife LSD make a noticeable difference in handling. If you often drive at the limit and like hanging the tail out (IE, drive like you're a Top Gear presenter), then you'll appreciate what it does. You'll be able to get more power down more quickly coming out of a corner without pitching the car into the weeds.
But more importantly, the Quaife LSD can help the Citroen transaxle better cope with the Turbo's power level. The Citroen was a good match for the 907-912, but the 910 takes it beyond its design limits. It's been mentioned many times on this list that the Citroen transaxle is the Turbo Esprit's weak link when you start hopping up the engine, or flogging the car to the limits of it's potential.
One of the common failure modes involves the open diff allowing one wheel to spin up under full power, really get spinning, then hook-up again when it finds spot of traction and BANG, all that tire-wheel-axle flywheel effect slams into the CWP. That's when teeth get stripped off. The Quaife torque-sensing LSD sends the power to both wheels under all conditions, minimizing the frequency with which wild wheel spin occurs. It doesn't completely eliminate the internal shock, but it minimizes the occurrence of the CWP's main enemy. Is it worth the cost? You'll have to answer that for yourself. But given the increasing rarity of the Citroen transaxles and parts, repairs are not an easy or inexpensive proposition.
 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

As for the improvement in handling the real benefit of LSD is getting the power down to the pavement coming out of a corner. With the open diff on an Esprit its pretty common to have the inside wheel spin when you get on the gas coming out of a corner which slows you down in the straight. The LSD keeps power going to both wheels and you get that power to the road and accelerate rather than just spin the inside tire. The Quaife does this with a minimal of adverse effect on handling. With a locked differential the car will get absolutely all of the power down but it gets quirky in slow speed, day to day driving, because the wheels can’t rotate at different speeds which they should be doing whenever you go around a corner. Clutch type differentials limit the difference in speed between wheels with a clutch in the middle and they either are too stiff in the parking lot or too loose on the track or somewhere in between. It's always a compromise. The Quaife gives you somewhat the best of both worlds. It acts almost like an open diff in the parking lot, but has good lockup when you’re pushing it coming out of a corner. As limited slips go it's the most invisible.

So the advantage to LSD is better ability to transfer power to the road but what happens when you have more power than traction. The advantage to having the inner wheel slip is that it acts as a safety release. When you come out of a corner, say in the rain, and hit the gas too hard, without limited slip, the inside wheel spins and you say wow I should lighten up a bit, it's slippery. When you hit the gas too hard coming out of a corner with LSD both wheels spin and you say “wow so that's what's behind me”! I should have slowed down.

Ok perhaps that's an exaggeration but my point is that it can make the car faster but sometimes going faster makes the edge more ragged. And for the record the Quaife doesn’t make the Esprit hard to drive in the rain but it does make it less forgiving.

Southern California's Holiday Motor Excursion wraps up the year: Video

Wed, 04 Jan 2012

It wouldn't be Christmas, New Year's or any of the other things we celebrate around this time without the annual Holiday Motor Excursion put on by the Horseless Carriage Club of America's Southern California Branch. Each year, between Dec. 25 and New Year's Day, a couple hundred cars older than your favorite grandfather drive, putter, wheeze or roar onto the roads in and around Pasadena, Calif., for a daylong road trip into motoring's past in a wheeled testament to mechanical devotion.
