“i dont know much about fixing boat motors. what this one was doing was, I could not get both forward and reverse at the same time. I could get forward to fun great but reverse would not work. If I got reverse to work, then forward wouldn't work. I replaced the unit with used rebuilt one”

I don't know much about fixing boat motors.  what this one was doing was, I could not get both forward and reverse at the same time.  I could get forward to run great but reverse would not work.  If I got reverse to work, then forward wouldn't work.  I replaced the unit with  used rebuilt one.

It does not leak any oil.  The gears appear to be good because both work, just not at the same time.
