WHAT I AM SELLING HERE IS A VERY NICE AND COMPLETE SET OF RARE VINTAGE ORIGINAL MAGNESIUM HALIBRAND "INDY-CAR OFFSET" 6-PIN KNOCK-OFF WHEELS THAT I JUST OBTAINED FROM THE ESTATE OF A FAMOUS OLD INDY-CAR AND SPRINT-CAR RACER!
IF YOU KNOW WHAT THESE WHEELS ARE...THEN I DON'T NEED TO TELL YOU HOW RARE IT IS TO FIND A NICE MATCHING SET OF THEM!
THE FRONT WHEELS ARE IN VERY NICE CONDITION, AND ALL OF THE LETTERS AND NUMBERS THAT WERE CAST INTO THEM ARE STILL VERY CRISP AND LEGIBLE!
THE REAR WHEELS ARE ALSO IN VERY NICE CONDITION, AND LIKEWISE ALL OF THE LETTERS AND NUMBERS THAT WERE CAST INTO THEM ARE STILL VERY CRISP AND LEGIBLE!
WHAT I FIND OF PARTICULAR INTEREST ABOUT THESE WHEELS, IS ALL OF THE INFORMATION THAT IS CAST AND STAMPED INTO EACH OF THEM!
WHEEL #1 LISTED ABOVE HAS THE SIZE "9.50 X 15" AND THE OFFSET "5.50 OFF" CAST INTO IT, ALONG WITH THE WORDS "R.C. SPEC"! I BELIEVE THAT THE WORDS "R.C. SPEC" STAND FOR "RETZLOFF CHEMICAL SPECIAL"! THE "RETZLOFF CHEMICAL" RACING TEAM WAS AN ORGANIZATION THAT RACED BOTH "INDY" CARS, AND DIRT "CHAMP" CARS IN THE MID TO LATE 1960'S, WITH AL UNSER AS THEIR PREMIER DRIVER! BELOW ARE A COUPLE OF PHOTOS OF SOME OF THEIR CARS:

IT'S KIND OF HARD TO TELL FOR SURE THE STYLE OF WHEEL THAT WAS USED ON THE INDY-CAR IN THE FIRST (2) PHOTOS, BUT THE SIZES LOOK TO BE FAIRLY CLOSE AS MY WHEELS LISTED ABOVE! AS FOR THE LAST (2) PHOTOS, YOU CAN CLEARLY SEE THAT THE WHEEL ON THE BACK OF THE CAR IS EXACTLY THE SAME STYLE AND SIZE AS WHEEL #1 LISTED ABOVE!
ANOTHER COOL THING ABOUT WHEEL #1 LISTED ABOVE, IS THAT THE "U.S.A.C." INSPECTION NUMBER "00267" IS STAMPED INTO IT...WHICH MEANS THAT IT WAS SANCTIONED FOR USE IN ALL 1967 "U.S.A.C." EVENTS...INCLUDING THE "INDY-500"! AND COINCIDENTALLY, THE "REZTLOFF CHEMICAL" TEAM DID FIELD A CAR IN THE 1967 "INDY-500" RACE, WITH AL UNSER AS THE DRIVER!

WHEEL #2 LISTED ABOVE IS DIMENSIONALLY IDENTICAL TO WHEEL #1 LISTED ABOVE, HOWEVER IT HAS THE WORD "HALIBRAND" CAST INTO IT, AND THE WORDS "R.C. SPEC" ARE MISSING! ALSO, IT HAS THE "U.S.A.C." INSPECTION NUMBER "68092" STAMPED INTO IT...WHICH MEANS THAT IT WAS SANCTIONED FOR USE IN ALL 1968 "U.S.A.C." EVENTS...INCLUDING THE "INDY-500"! I BELIEVE THAT THIS WHEEL WAS PROBABLY A REPLACEMENT FOR A WHEEL THAT GOT DAMAGED DURING A RACE...OR PERHAPS A CHANGE IN TIRE SIZE, OR COMPOUND?
WHEEL #3 LISTED ABOVE HAS THE "U.S.A.C." INSPECTION NUMBERS "68028 XW GY" STAMPED INTO IT...WHICH MEANS THAT IT WAS SANCTIONED FOR USE IN ALL 1968 "U.S.A.C." EVENTS...INCLUDING THE "INDY-500"! IN ADDITION, I BELIEVE THAT THE "XW" STANDS FOR "EXTRA-WIDE", AND THE "GY" STANDS FOR "GOODYEAR" TIRE! PERHAPS THIS WHEEL WAS USED TO TEST THE VALIDITY OF THE "GOODYEAR versus FIRESTONE" TIRE BATTLE THAT WAS GOING ON IN THE 1960'S "TIRE WARS"!
AND LASTLY, WHEEL #4 LISTED ABOVE IS IDENTICAL IN EVERY WAY TO WHEEL #3 LISTED ABOVE, AND HAS THE "U.S.A.C." INSPECTION NUMBERS "68017 XW FS" STAMPED INTO IT...WHICH MEANS THAT IT WAS SANCTIONED FOR USE IN ALL 1968 "U.S.A.C." EVENTS...INCLUDING THE "INDY-500"! HOWEVER, IN ADDITION TO THE "XW", WHICH I BELIEVE STANDS FOR "EXTRA-WIDE", IT HAS AN "FS" THAT I BELIEVE STANDS FOR "FIRESTONE" TIRE! PERHAPS THIS WHEEL WAS USED TO TEST THE FIRESTONE TIRE AGAINST THE OTHER "EXTRA-WIDE" GOODYEAR RACING TIRE THAT WAS AVAILABLE AT THE TIME...TO SETTLE ONCE AND FOR ALL WHO HAD THE BETTER PRODUCT IN THE "GOODYEAR versus FIRESTONE" TIRE DEBATE!
AS AN INTERESTING SIDE NOTE, IF YOU LOOK AT THE PHOTOS OF ALL OF THE CARS THAT PARTICIPATED IN THE 1967 & 1968 "INDY-500" RACE, YOU'LL NOTICE THAT THE MAJORITY OF THE CARS INVOLVED USED THIS PARTICULAR STYLE OF WHEEL! THEREFORE, THEY WOULD PROBABLY BE CORRECT FOR A LOT OF DIFFERENT CARS FROM THAT ERA!
ALL IN ALL, SOME OF THE RAREST AND NICEST VINTAGE MAGNESIUM HALIBRAND "INDY CAR" WHEELS THAT I HAVE EVER OWNED...AND A GREAT ADDITION TO ANY CAR THAT THEY ARE PUT ON!
I DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE I CAN TELL YOU ABOUT THESE WHEELS, SO WHAT YOU SEE...IS WHAT YOU GET!
