SO I DECIDED THE BEST WAY TO WEED OUT THE JUNK OR OTHERWISE LESS QUALITY USED ELECTRICAL PARTS, WAS TO DISMANTLE THEM. WITH THIS INFORMATION I CAN SAY, IN MY OPINION, YOU COULD POSSIBLY GET, CONSERVATIVELY SPEAKING, ANOTHER 100,000 MILES OF DRIVING SERVICE FROM THIS MOTOR BEFORE THE BRUSHES WEAR OUT! IF YOU ARE A DO IT YOURSELF INDIVIDUAL LIKE MYSELF, WHEN A REPAIR IS NECESSARY YOU REALLY ONLY WANT TO DO IT ONCE. THIS MOTOR IS BETTER THAN AVERAGE BECAUSE OF THE MOTOR'S OVER ALL EXTERIOR CONDITION REGARDING LACK OF DUST ACCUMULATION ON IT BEFORE I REMOVED IT FROM THE DONOR CAR. AND THE AWESOME CONDITION OF THE MOTOR'S GEAR TEETH. WHAT I MEAN BY DUST ACCUMULATION IS THIS. EVEN THOUGH THE WINDOW MOTOR IS ENCLOSED IN THE DOOR, IT IS STILL EXPOSED TO THE ELEMENTS. YOU WILL UNDERSTAND THIS BETTER WHEN YOU REMOVE YOUR OLD MOTOR. IT IS COMMON FOR A DUST LAYER TO COLLECT ON THE UPPER SURFACE OF THESE MOTORS OVER TIME. I OBSERVED, WHEN TESTED, A SMOOTH SOUNDING OPERATION, AND LACK OF ANY EVIDENCE TO THE EXTERIOR GEAR WEAR. AS YOU CAN SEE IN THE FIRST AND THIRD THROUGH SEVENTH PICTURES, I HAVE GIVEN YOU PICTURES THAT PROVIDE YOU WITH AN ADDED LEVEL OF PROOF THIS MOTOR DID NOT COME FROM A FLOOD CAR. LOOK HOW SHINY THE COPPER WINDING STILL LOOKS AFTER ALL THESE YEARS. WHAT I CALL BRUSH MATERIAL ARE TWO SPRING LOADED RECTANGULAR BLOCKS, AS SEEN WITHIN THE CIRCULAR OF THE ELECTRICAL ASSEMBLY IN THE FIRST, THIRD AND FOURTH PICTURES, THAT MAINTAIN CONSTANT CONTACT WITH THE ARMATURE AND WEAR AS IT SPINS OVER TIME. PART OF MY INSPECTION INVOLVES ME MANUALLY PUSHING EACH BLOCK BACK INTO IT'S RESPECTIVE GUIDE CHANNEL TO MEASURE THE REMAINING BRUSH IN COMPARISON TO WHERE THE BRUSH WOULD BE POSITIONED IF NEW. THEN I RELEASE THE BRUSH TO CONFIRM IT WILL SPRING BACK TO FULL EXTENSION. THIS IS VITAL! ANY RESTRICTION I DISCOVER TO THE BRUSH WITHIN IT'S GUIDE CHANNEL WILL FAIL MY TEST ON THE MOTOR. ANY RESTRICTION, HOWEVER SLIGHT, MAY CAUSE THE MOTOR TO STOP WORKING DOWN THE ROAD. THE FOURTH PICTURE SHOWS THE BRUSH MATERIAL WITHIN THE CIRCULAR OF THE ELECTRICAL ASSEMBLY. AND THE FIFTH PICTURE SHOWS THE ARMATURE IN POSITION HOLDING THE BRUSHES BACK. THE SIXTH PICTURE PEERS INTO THE GEAR BOX AND A GLIMPSE OF THE INNER SPROCKET WITH A RUST FREE UPPER BEARING. MANUAL ROTATION OF THE EXTERIOR GEAR WAS EFFORTLESS. ROTATING THE EXTERIOR GEAR ALLOWED ME TO EXAMINE ALL THE SPLINES ON THE INNER SPROCKET. I FOUND NO EVIDENCE THIS MOTOR HAD EVER JAMMED. NO EVIDENCE OF GROOVE WEAR OR DAMAGE TO THE INNER SPROCKET AT ALL. THE SEVENTH PICTURE SHOWS A CLEAN MOTOR CASE WITH UNDAMAGED MAGNETS AND A RUST FREE LOWER BEARING. IF YOU ARE HAVING TROUBLE WITH A STUBBORN RIGHT REAR WINDOW BECAUSE IT DOES ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WHEN YOU WANT IT TOO, THEN REPLACING YOUR MOTOR MAY BE NEXT STEPS. HOWEVER, IF YOU ARE NOT SURE WHY YOUR RIGHT REAR WINDOW DOES NOT MOVE, LET'S SEE IF YOU ACTUALLY DO NEED A MOTOR. REAR WINDOW REGULATORS OF THE MERCEDES W126 OFTEN EXPERIENCE REGULATOR GUIDE FAILURE MORE SO THAN A FAILED MOTOR. SOMETIMES THE PLASTIC GUIDE WILL BREAK AND JAM THE REGULATOR MOVEMENT. WHICH IN TURN MAY MAKE IT SEEM LIKE THE MOTOR IS BAD. IN ANY CASE, IF YOU ARE A DO IT YOURSELF INDIVIDUAL, I HAVE OUTLINED A TEST YOU CAN DO DIRECTLY TO THE MOTOR WITHOUT REMOVING IT FROM THE CAR. THIS TEST IS BELOW. I HAVE EXPERIENCED REGULATOR GUIDE FAILURE MYSELF WITH MY 1985 MERCEDES 300SD. NO NEED TO BUY A MOTOR IF YOU REALLY DO NOT NEED ONE. SO, UNLIKE MOST SELLERS THAT WOULD HAVE YOU BUY A MOTOR AND BE DONE WITH YOU, I HAVE INCLUDED STEPS TO TEST THE MOTOR, OUTLINED BELOW, IF YOU ARE A DO IT YOURSELF INDIVIDUAL. THIS TEST BYPASSES ALL SWITCHES, FUSES, AND WIRING FROM THE CAR TO THE MOTOR. YOU DO NOT NEED TO REMOVE THE MOTOR/REGULATOR FROM THE CAR FOR THIS TEST. HOWEVER, YOU DO NEED TO REMOVE THE DOOR PANEL. AND YOU WILL NEED A SEPARATE 12 VOLT POWER SUPPLY LIKE A BATTERY CHARGER. WHILE THE DOOR PANEL IS OFF YOU CAN INSPECT THE REGULATOR'S PLASTIC GUIDE TO DETERMINE IF THAT IS YOUR WINDOW ISSUE INSTEAD. IF NOT THEN THIS WOULD BE A GOOD TIME TO APPLY FRESH GREASE TO THE GUIDE TRACK FOR SMOOTH SLIDING. REMOVE THE DOOR PANEL. NOT SURE HOW? LET ME KNOW. I WILL TELL YOU HOW I REMOVED MINE. UNPLUG THE FEMALE WINDOW SWITCH PLUG FROM THE WINDOW SWITCH. NOTE THE LOCATION OF THE MOTOR'S GREEN AND BLACK WIRES LEADING INTO THIS PLUG. I USE TWO METAL POINTED TOOLS FOR THIS TEST. YOU CAN EVEN USE TWO LONG NAILS. YOU WILL CLIP THE POSITIVE CABLE OF THE BATTERY CHARGER TO ONE POINTED TOOL. YOU WILL CLIP THE NEGATIVE CABLE OF THE CHARGER TO THE OTHER POINTED TOOL. DO NOT ALLOW THE TOOLS TO TOUCH EACH OTHER DURING THE TEST. THERE WILL BE SPARKS! YOUR GOAL IS TO PLACE AND HOLD THE POINT OF ONE TOOL(NAIL) INTO THE FEMALE PLUG'S GREEN WIRE HOLE. AT THE SAME TIME PLACE AND HOLD THE OTHER NAIL INTO THE FEMALE PLUG'S BLACK WIRE HOLE. ONCE AGAIN, WITHOUT ALLOWING THE BATTERY CHARGER'S CONNECTORS TO TOUCH(SPARKS WOULD RESULT) CLIP THE BATTERY CHARGER'S POSITIVE CABLE TO THE POINTED NAIL(TOOL) INSERTED INTO THE SWITCH'S FEMALE PLUG'S GREEN WIRE HOLE TO THE MOTOR. AT THE SAME TIME CLIP THE CHARGER'S NEGATIVE CABLE TO THE OTHER NAIL(POINTED TOOL) THAT IS INSERTED IN THE SWITCH'S FEMALE PLUG'S BLACK WIRE HOLE TO THE MOTOR. REMEMBER DO NOT ALLOW THE CHARGER'S CONNECTORS OR THE POINTED TOOLS TO TOUCH EACH TOGETHER. THERE WILL BE SOME SPARKS. THIS FIRST CONNECTION MAY NOT PRODUCE A RESULT AS IT MAY BE A COMMAND TO RAISE AN ALREADY RAISED WINDOW. IF THE REGULATOR'S GUIDE IS IN GOOD ORDER DID THE WINDOW MOVE NORMALLY WITH THIS FIRST CONNECTION? YES? GREAT! AGAIN, IF THE WINDOW MOVED BUT THE MOVEMENT WAS SLUGGISH, CHECK THE CONDITION OF THE REGULATOR'S PLASTIC GUIDE. THE GUIDE MAY NEED FRESH GREASE, MAY BE BROKEN, OR MISSING ALL TOGETHER. IF THE WINDOW MOVED NORMALLY WITH THE FIRST CONNECTION, REVERSE THE WIRES. REVERSE THE WIRES ANYWAY IF THE WINDOW DID NOT MOVE WITH THIS FIRST CONNECTION. THIS MEANS TO CONNECT THE CHARGER'S POSITIVE CABLE TO THE MOTOR'S BLACK WIRE NAIL(TOOL). CONNECT THE CHARGER'S NEGATIVE CABLE TO THE MOTOR'S GREEN WIRE NAIL(TOOL). DID THE WINDOW MOVE THIS TIME OR RETURN NORMALLY TO IT'S ORIGINAL POSITION? YES? GREAT! YOU DO NOT NEED TO REPLACE YOUR WINDOW MOTOR. IF THE WINDOW DID NOT MOVE NO MATTER HOW YOU CONNECTED THE WIRES, THEN IT IS LIKELY YOUR WINDOW MOTOR DOES NEED REPLACING. PLEASE ASK ANY QUESTIONS PRIOR TO PURCHASE. THANKS. Vauxhall Ampera Price revealed
Tue, 14 Dec 2010The Vauxhall Ampera costs £28,995 - even after the taxpayer chips in £5k Sensibly, Vauxhall has chosen to reveal the price of the range-extender Vauxhall Ampera on the day it was included on the list of cars eligible for the £5,000 taxpayer subsidy for plug-in cars. Vauxhall will be getting £33,995 for every Ampera they shift, although the buyer will pay £28,995 thanks to the taxpayer subsidy. Which, whether you pick the subsidised price or the actual price, is an awful lot of money.
