Caterham Supersport R extends Caterham 7 range
Sat, 10 Nov 2012Caterham has added the Supersport R to its range of ’7′ models with a 2.0 litre Duratec Ford engine delivering 180bhp. In the meantime, Caterham’s core road car business is the old Lotus 7 range of Caterhams, so it makes sense to keep that more appealing and relevant until new cars start to arrive, so we get the Caterham Supersport R as an addition to the range to slot in between the Supersport and the Superlight models. The Supersport R gets a Ford Duratec 2.0 litre engine which produces 180bhp, which doesn’t sound a huge amount, but when you consider the Supersport R weighs in at just 535kg it starts to look plenty.
MIT develops self-transforming materials that behave 'like robots without robots'
Wed, 15 Oct 2014A cross-disciplinary research lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has developed a suite of programmable materials, including carbon fiber, printed wood grain, textile composites, rubbers and plastics, that self-transform when exposed to an external stimulus. Director of the Self-Assembly Lab, Skylar Tibbits, presented a TED talk on 4D printing in 2013, where he demonstrated how a flat sheet of material could effectively build itself when exposed to water, like a robot without a robot. Following positive feedback from industries including aviation, automotive and manufacturing, his lab has been working on developing materials that change according to different activation sources, including heat, light, and air pressure, in addition to water – all of which have automotive relevance.
Ford Granada with the heart of a Koenigsegg CCX
Fri, 15 Jun 2012Two mad Norwegians – Joel Olsen and Ingar Byman – have transplanted the Ford V8 from the Koenigsegg CCX in to a Mk II Granada – Project ZZZ…ZZZ. The MK II Granada was a perfectly decent big Ford in the days Ford made big cars. Wallowy, yes, but better as the 2.8i than the 2.8 and even quite fun in a ‘piloting a barge’ sort of way.
