RCA students redesign classic cars for Salon Privé

Eleven postgraduates from the Royal College of Art's Vehicle Design program have redesigned and modernized past Concours-winning cars for the ‘Concours of the Future' design exhibition at this year's Salon Privé in London. Concours of the Future, a first for the Salon Privé, will be showcased on 4 July before being judged the next day by a panel chaired by automotive designer and RCA visiting professor Peter Stevens. The judging panel is made up of Dale Harrow, head of the RCA Vehicle Design program and some of the biggest names in car design: Giles Taylor, director of design at Rolls-Royce; Peter Schreyer, chief design officer at Hyundai and Kia and Peter Horbury, vice president – design at Geely.

This in-your-face hunk of high-speed SUV is Brabus’ B63S–700 Widestar, the latest super-powerful conversion from the German Mercedes-Benz tuners. This time the aftermarket fettler has turned its attention to Merc’s already rather powerful ML63 AMG off-roader, adding some fairly garish visual modifications and performing some even crazier tweaks underneath the bonnet ahead of the car’s debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show next month. Uwe Bahnsen 1930-2013

The design world remembers Uwe Bahnsen, who passed away on 30 July aged 83. Born in Hamburg, he studied Fine Arts at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste before joining Ford in 1958. His final position at the blue oval was vice president of design, which he held until 1986.
