I purchased this 8210 coil selector so that I could run two complete ignition systems in case something failed when I was in the middle of nowhere. I used 2 MSD ignition boxes, 2 MSD coils, 2 MSD ignition pickups (in the distributor), this automatic coil selector and a switch to choose either ignition. This worked very well for a few years. I could even switch from one system to the other while the engine was running. It was pretty cool! This type of system is used by every NASCAR team and now you can have complete redundancy too.

I have continued experimenting with my car and changed it over to a distributorless ignition system and no longer need this part. I am selling it and all the other components of my dual system. You can download the installation instructions with the wiring diagram from the MSD website.

MSD's Description:

In many forms of circle track racing a dual or redundant ignition system is used. If you use a dual system complete with two coils, the Automatic Coil Selector makes it possible to change coils, without having to pull into the pits and change the coil wire. The Automatic Coil Selector features three posts; one for each coil and the other to go to the distributor cap. This way, when a driver switches ignitions, the Coil Selector automatically switches to the backup coil. To use the Coil Selector, two ignitions, two coils and a single-pole, double-throw switch are required. In many forms of circle track racing a dual or redundant ignition system is used. Studebaker trees: Dead company, living advertisement

Thu, 28 Apr 2011

Some of you may have seen this already; it’s been popular on the map sites for a while. But those who don’t know about Bendix Woods County Park west of South Bend, Ind., feast your eyes on 5,000 pine trees, planted in 1937, spelling Studebaker when viewed from high enough. Bendix Woods park was formerly the Studebaker proving grounds, and much of the track surface is still visible in satellite photos.
