The world is moving fast – the Vietnam War is raging; Enoch Powell delivers his ‘Rivers of Blood’ Speech; the last scheduled Steam Trains run; the Beatles release the White Album and Apollo 8 goes to the Dark Side of the Moon – and I’m standing with my dad staring at the new Jaguar XJ. And of all those world-significant events I think the only one I remember without the benefit of hindsight is the new Jaguar XJ.

Audi introduces free smartphone app for roadside service

With its new roadside-assistance tool, Audi joins the crew of carmakers creating smartphone apps. Available for iPhone, Android and some Blackberry devices, the free app connects you directly with Audi and its insurance partner, Allstate. The app sends your vehicle information to Audi Roadside Services, allows you to select the type of service you require and communicates your location using your phone's GPS.

GM Europe's vice president of design Mark Adams has given aspiring designers tips to stand out from the crowd with their portfolios in a Twitter Q&A session. In the video session Adams offered advice to one participant who asked, "If there was one piece of advice you would give to someone wanting to become a designer, what would it be and why?". With portfolios, he explained, it's not just about the talent, it's about having the ability to convey your thought process along the way.
