The best bits of Monterey Car Week 2014: a Pebble Beach photo gallery
Mon, 18 Aug 2014CAR’s Ben Oliver is just back from the races, auctions and shows of Monterey Car Week, culminating in the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Here’s his completely unrepresentative photo-diary: as you’ll see, he got most excited by the oddball Concours de LeMons… The standard of restoration required to exhibit at the Concours de LeMons is a little lower than at the other Monterey Car Week events. Volvo Flywheel KERS Hybrid cuts fuel consumption by 25%
Fri, 26 Apr 2013Two years ago we reported that Volvo were testing a clever hybrid Flywheel KERS system for road cars and hoped it would prove to be a good way to make road cars more economical. And it seems it does. The Hybrid Flywheel KERS system Volvo has developed weighs only 6kg, has a diameter of just 20cm, is made of carbon fibre, sits in a vacuum and is located on the back axle and works by recovering energy under braking which is then stored for use when the car moves off.
Ultra-rare Steyr Puch 500 goes to auction
Tue, 16 Sep 2014£18,000 might seem like a lot of money for a car based on the original Fiat 500, but this particular Steyr Puch example is one of just 33 ever built. Austrian firm Steyr Puch entered into an agreement with Fiat in 1954 after production was halted during World War II, and began production of the 500 under licence. Only 33 right-hand drive examples were ever produced, and of those only two survive; this example and one in the Steyr Puch museum in Austria.
