‘Nemesis’ breaks UK electric car speed record

Sat, 29 Sep 2012

An electric car – based on a second-hand Lotus Exige – has broken the UK electric car speed record with a speed of 151.6mph. We’re not entirely sure how relevant a new UK speed record for an electric car is, but let’s be parochial and report it anyway. England football squad planning big car buys after the World Cup

Thu, 12 Jun 2014

The Ferrari 458 Spider – just one of the supercars heading for an England player We’re all aware that our very well-paid Premier league footballers love to spend their loose change on a never-ending stream of exotic and expensive wheels, but it seems – almost to a man – they’re planning a big spending spree when they return from Brazil. Magnitude Finance – a go-to finance company for high-end purchases – has revealed that thirteen of the current England squad are clients and that they have big plans for their car fleets when they get back from Brazil – whether they win and get a reputed £350k win bonus or not. The most popular cars being lined up by the players include the new Range Rover, the Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 Roadster and the Ferrari 458 Spider.

Others dabbled (remember the Jag XJ220?), but none achieved the Macca’s astonishing single-mindedness.Browse our GBU-style pick of the decade's landmarks below – and vote for your favourite supercar decade in our poll  Make and model Year Price Engine 0-60mph Top speed 1990 £156,000 5707cc V12, 492bhp, 428lb ft   4.1sec 202mph  For   The Audi-fettled 6.0 VT was the last, and best Against   A playboy's plaything; never gained real credibility Verdict   Lambo's thinking looked slow after the F40 and 959   Lamborghinis third mid-engined V12 supercar lacked the impact of the first two.
