While 2009 will most certainly be remembered as a gloom riddled year - with the automotive industry stricken by the economic downturn and a slew of cutbacks - we encourage you to remember the few gems that graced the auto show circuit. Mercedes SLS AMG GT3 (2010) first official pictures

This is the Mercedes SLS AMG GT3, a racing version of Merc's incredible Gullwing supercar. Unveiled today at the 2010 New York auto show, it'll start racing in 2011. Correct – the FIA’s GT3 races are designed for ‘near-series’ cars so costs are kept low, and there’s a burgeoning field with everything from R8s and 911s to BMW’s new Z4 racer.

Lexus launches own Design Award contest

The first Lexus Design Award has been launched that gives the next generation of designers the chance of seeing their work showcased at next year's Milan Design Week. The theme of this global competition is ‘Motion', with Lexus looking for designs that respond to issues 
in daily life that relate to ‘Motion' as well as providing solutions. Two of the ten award winners will then develop prototypes with a renowned designer – either Sam Hecht or Junya Ishigami – acting as their mentor.
