Longest-serving AA patrol retires after 1.4 million miles
Thu, 28 Aug 2014THE AA's longest-serving patrolman is retiring after 1.4 million miles and almost 50 years on the road. Jim Haggart joined the AA in Glasgow in August 1966 as a 16-year-old cadet after spotting the opportunity in a newspaper advert. The 64-year-old has helped an estimated 87,000 motorists with car trouble - between 1,500 and 2,000 a year - around the west of Scotland, rescuing animals, young children and even babies that have been accidentally locked in vehicles.
VW Golf Bluemotion concept (2008): first pictures
Mon, 08 Sep 2008By Ben Pulman First Official Pictures 08 September 2008 13:22 This is Volkswagen’s cleanest Mk6 Golf, a Bluemotion concept car that is claimed to achieve 74mpg while puffing out a paltry 99g/km. Those are figures on a par with today’s Polo Bluemotion, but this concept will become production reality in mid-2009. A 1.6-litre common-rail diesel engine powers the new Golf Bluemotion, producing 104bhp and 184lb ft, but those remarkable figures are helped by revised ratios on the five-speed ‘box, optimised aerodynamics and low rolling resistance tyres. There’s also a particulate filter to keep the exhaust gases clean.
New tech suggests windowless cars are on the horizon
Thu, 20 Feb 2014For years students have presented windowless car projects, explaining how the view from outside would be projected within the interior. Now an aerospace company has created the technology that could hold the key to turning the dream into a reality. Spike Aerospace's upcoming S-512 supersonic business class jet replaces its windows with high-definition screens displaying footage of the panoramic views streamed live from micro cameras on its fuselage as tests have unsurprisingly shown that passengers are a little uneasy about not being able to see outside.
