Type:FRONT COMPENSATING SPROCKET Material:STEEL Brand:HARLEY DAVIDSON Color:RUST PATINA Manufacturer Part Number:40280-54 Warranty:No Front Sprocket Teeth:22

Fresh from a barn in Maine.  This is Harley Davidson's first attemp to add some smoothness to their Big Twin line of motorcycles.  This is an original front compensating sprocket for the Knucklehead, Panhead and I believe the Big Twin Flatheads.  This was used on the post 1954 models and can be retrofitted to the earlier models back to 1938 I believe.   The parts manual lists this as fitting the OHV motors, but I believe the UL and ULH used the same sprocket shafts as the OHV's, so this may fit the B.T. Flatties also.  This will not fit the 45 models.  The factory had a seperate one for those bikes.  This requires the use of the 1954 and 1955 or later outter primary cover which had an expanded sprocket dome to accomadate the comp. sprocket's extra width.  This appears to be in good shape, but I have not dissasembeled it.  There is no apparent damage to the outside that would make this suspect.  The gear teeth show some wear, but still have a small flat spot on the top of the teeth.  The taper and the key way are both in very good condition.  This item was a real step forward in making a Harley Davidson a more user friendly, comfortable motorcycle, giving those old rigid frame bike more of the smoother shifting that we are used to with today.  The old sprockets bolted directly to motor shafts were smooth only in an experienced riders shifting ability.  Thank you for looking and please check my other auctions for more HARLEY parts.

Obama vows to help rebuild industry to compete, win

Wed, 25 Feb 2009

President Barack Obama on Tuesday vowed to hold U.S. automakers accountable for "bad practices" but promised to help create a "retooled, re-imagined auto industry." In remarks to a joint session of Congress, Obama gave a sobering assessment of the nation's ills--mainly economic--but said: "We will rebuild, we will recover, and the United States of America will emerge stronger than before." About midway through the speech, the president said: "As for our auto industry, everyone recognizes that years of bad decision-making and a global recession have pushed our automakers to the brink. We should not, and will not, protect them from their own bad practices.
