Mazda 3 saloon (2009): first photos

It's a four-door for the notchback-obsessed Americans, but we'll see the five-door Euro-style Mazda 3 hatch a few weeks later at the 2008 Bologna motor show. The new Mazda 3 is believed to be based on the engineering skeleton of a Ford Focus, so expect a front-wheel drive layout and a wide spread of diesel and petrol engines.

Late Tuesday, General Motors and Chrysler submitted their recovery plans to the government. The bottom line: GM and Chrysler say the need another $18 billion total in government loans to make it until auto sales turn around. Maybe it’s my age – maybe it’s just a boy thing – but if ever I think of a ‘James Bond’ car it’s the Aston Martin DB5, complete with machine guns, bullet-proof shield, revolving number plates, tracking device, removable roof panel, oil slick sprayer, nail spreader and smoke screen. Sadly, the closest I’ve ever come to owning a James Bond DB5 was the toy car I had as a child.
