The Panasonic VL2020 battery was used in all BMW diamond shape keys and almost all BMW keys from 2005 except those with comfort access (comfort access keys have a user replaceable battery). These are the same Panasonic VL2020 batteries as the original, but, please note that the lead configuration used in the BMW key fobs is custom for BMW and not available. This battery is the next closest thing and will required a little modification and adding a wire. Instructions for making it work are included in the form of a web link to my web page with detailed color pictures. My instructions involve cutting down the negative lead so that that battery fits flush to the board and then cutting the positive lead leaving a small stub than then soldering a wire from the stub to the board. A lot of people that buy the battery are following YouTube videos or instructions posted on forums which involve ripping off the lead frames off the new and old battery and just slipping the battery between the old lead frame. I do not recommend this method. I get a lot of these blotched key fobs in for repair and have taken pictures of some of their handy work and posted them to a web page which I call the Key Fob Wall of Shame www.bmwgm5.com/kf_wos.htm

Beware valet parking insurance loophole

Fri, 13 Jun 2014

USING A VALET parking service could mean losing your car with no insurance cover. Drivers are being warned to check their insurance policies before handing over their car keys to valet parking attendants as more than half (51%) of the UK’s motor insurance policies do not cover this service. While valet parking companies provide insurance cover for their employees to drive your car, many insurance policies do not cover ‘damage to vehicle while in the control of valet parking staff.’ This means if your car is damaged or written off while it’s being parked or retrieved by valet parking staff, you could be left seriously out of pocket with no claim against the valet parking company.

MINI Paceman Adventure Concept – it’s a Countryman Pickup

Sat, 26 Apr 2014

It’s a MINI Pickup – the MINI Paceman Adventure It’s always hard to decide if a MINI concept – and they’re not exactly as rare as hens teeth – is a real one-off or a pointer to a future production MINI. A good example of that is MINI’s April Fool in 2012 for ‘Camping MINIs’ which turned in to a fully-blown official concept in 2013 as the MINI Clubvan Camper, Countryman All4 Camp & Cowley Caravan. Now we get the MINI Paceman Adventure Concept, a pickup based on the Pacemena (itself based on the Countryman) put together by BMW students and instructors at plants in Munich and Dingolfing and built as an exercise to show the skills and talent of the apprentice programme.

One Lap of the Web: Scottsdale oddballs, a lost Morris and in-home car washes

Tue, 28 Jan 2014

A man in the UK purchased an old Morris Isis...then forgot about it in the back of his garage for 12 years. When he rediscovered the car and cleared all the trash off, he also learned it was one of the oldest of its kind in the world. While we have a few questions, not the least of which is "how does one forget a car parked in the garage," we're pleased to see that the owner has since restored the car and plans to strap a trailer on the back and take it to the beach later this summer.
