Cadillac Converj concept
Sun, 11 Jan 2009Cadillac surprised the press today when it revealed a new 2+2 concept called the Converj. In his introduction to the concept, GM Vice-Chairman Bob Lutz said the vehicle was "pushing the envelope on design quality, and efficiency - everything that makes a great design great". Conceived at GM's Advanced Design studios in Coventry, UK, by a design team led by Simon Cox (Director of GM Advanced Design UK), the project was brought to realization in the US under the leadership of Dave Rand, Executive Director of GM Advanced Design.
1961 Ford Gyron concept scale model sells for $40,000
Wed, 19 Dec 2012A scale model of the 1961 Ford Gyron concept has sold at auction for $40,000, around four times its estimate. The space-age concept car – designed by Alex Tremulis, McKinley Thompson, Syd Mead, Bill Dayton, John Najjar, and Elwood Engel – debuted in 1961 at the New York International Auto Show and featured two wheels mounted along the car's centerline, usung a gyroscope for stability. The full-size model – which relied on stabilizing wheels instead of a gyroscope – also predicted the development of satellite navigation systems, car phones and infrared sensing.

Wed, 28 May 2014After years of speculation, Google finally announced its Google Car autonomous vehicle at the Recode Code Conference in Palos Verdes, CA yesterday. Google CEO Sergey Brin unveiled the company's new two-seat, driverless vehicle at the software conference, underlining the company's aim of drastically reducing road deaths and injuries caused by human error, particularly by distracted drivers. "We're now exploring what fully self-driving vehicles would look like by building some prototypes; they'll be designed to operate safely and autonomously without requiring human intervention," said Brin.
