KKK K-26/27 Stg-1 Hybrid 420 HP Ported Blueprinted Turbocharger

Porsche 944 (and Audi) owners that have a need for a simple bolt-on turbo upgrade have a solution here that can deliver up to 420 HP when asked.  Instead of trying to reinvent the wheel, we at Exclusive Turbosystems have taken the route of basing this hybrid on proven KKK components.  The precision German engineering applied to manufacture the original Porsche 944 spec turbocharger is retained for the turbine section of this unique performance upgrade turbo.  The compressor section is a much larger K-27 spec for it's additional airflow capacity. We have modified the CHRA and turbine housing to properly match the flow capabilities of this 42 pound/ hour capacity compressor.

As with all of our signature series turbos, the CHRA is fully modified for increased durability and performance.  The journal bearings are modified to increase oil flow to the turbine shaft surface.  Of course the turbine shaft bearing journals are polished for reduced friction during operation.  This upgrade turbocharger has an upgraded 360 degree thrust plate to better deal with the added performance of this hybrid high-performance turbocharger.  Additionally, each thrust plate pad is polished and its oil ports chamfered for higher flow at the thrust surface under load.  These modifications deliver more lubricating oil to the rotating components and improve the cooling of the bearings during operation.  Friction reduction within the CHRA has a net gain of 150 rpm sooner full boost over an unmodified CHRA rotor group.  This is an Exclusive Turbosystems signature of every turbocharger we build.

The housings are touched by our carbide burs and sanding rolls as well.  The working side of this turbo has been heavily worked over to give the exhaust gasses an easy path to the turbine blade tips.  Velocity improvements in turbine housings directly relate to improved boost response and compressor map efficiency.  Cast surfaces are poor in factory turbochargers and the KKK K26 is no exception.  We have spent a few hours correcting the imperfections of the factory turbine housing casting.  Even the turbine outlet is ported to improve the gas flow after the turbine wheel.  This porting alone will vastly improve the spool-up speed of the turbine owed to the reduction in backpressure.  The compressor wheel is not only 11 mm larger in diameter at the entry but the overall diameter of the wheel is larger as well.   As the pictures show, clearly this wheel has a taller blade form giving a larger volume of fin surface available to gobble up air molecules and turn them into supersonic pressurized fury.  This K27 wheel moves air on another level compared to the factory (944 spec) K26 compressor.  We have chosen the path of replacing the entire compressor section because it is a better aerodynamic match for the compressor wheel than trying to get it to flow air efficiently inside of the much smaller K-26 compressor housing.

Because of the above mentioned modifications to this turbocharger, you can expect a 400 rpm sooner onset of boost over an unmodified hybrid offered by another turbo specialist.  The porting and CHRA really make this a sweet turbocharger indeed.  Boost response will be similar to a 944 K26 but with about 40% more airflow at the same boost pressures and when tuned for higher boost pressures the top-end will test your nerves and make you fall in love with boost all over again.  This is one serious upgrade turbocharger.  This STG I upgrade comes with a factory exhaust housing and water-cooled bearing housing which makes bolting up to the 944T up-pipe a cinch but we go one step further than that.  The compressor outlet is identical to a 944T because it comes from an OEM casting that we have gone through the trouble of fitting and TIG welding one onto the K-27 compressor housing.  Should make it easier to fit this upgraded turbocharger into a 944T engine bay.  Only the compressor inlet is a larger diameter than the (admittedly tiny at 2") OEM casting at 2.75".  Of course the K-27 compressor housing is larger than the stock K-26 housing but being only 1" larger in diameter, there are no real issues with clearance to worry about.  This turbo has only grown an extra 1/2" around it's compressor housing yet packs a punch that can yield more than 300 WHP to really make the 951 chassis scoot.  Talk about a tune-up!  Exclusive Turbosystems style.

Features:

- Compressor wheel upgraded from 38.72mm to 49.23mm

- Blueprinted CHRA

- 360 Degree thrust components

- Factory KKK housings used for construction

- Fully ported compressor and turbine housings

One Lap of the Web: World's strangest Edsel Pacer, racing Corvettes and 10 automotive missteps

Mon, 15 Jul 2013

We spend a lot of time on the Internet -- pretty much whenever we're not driving, writing about or working on cars. Since there's more out there than we'd ever be able to cover, here's our daily digest of car stuff on the Web you may not otherwise have heard about. -- The Edsel didn't win many style awards as a passenger car, but how do you feel about it as a piece of heavy construction equipment?

Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga gets a 2010 Chevrolet Corvette from GM

Thu, 03 Jun 2010

Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga may have just missed a perfect game on Wednesday night, but General Motors tried to help make up for it--with a 2010 Chevrolet Corvette convertible. Galarraga retired the first 26 Cleveland Indians batters in order on Wednesday night. The would-be final batter, Jason Donald, appeared to ground out, but umpire Jim Joyce ruled him safe in a controversial call that later that night he admitted was wrong.
