If you are at any point planning an extended offshore passage by sail or power boat, then this unit is a MUST HAVE for your ditch bag or liferaft.  Of course you hope never to use it, but you sure want it onboard for survival.

This unit produces a pint or better of pure potable water (from salt or brackish water) from an hour of pump strokes.  It was manufactured in 12/1994 and has been inspected/tested 3 times since, most recently in 4/2013. It has NEVER BEEN USED IN A RESCUE SITUATION; it's only seen bench saltwater in a test environment, then promptly rinsed with fresh water and re-stored.   At last test, it worked flawlessly.

You sure wouldn't want to try to fill a gallon jug with this (your arms get pretty tired), but if ever in a liferaft awaiting discovery and rescue, this becomes your lifeline.  Most offshore cruisers insist on including one in their liferaft or ditch bag (if your crew knows you have one, their wives are MUCH more willing to let them make the passage with you!).  That's why I bought it, and now that my cruising (38,000+ miles) is in the past, so should you.

This unit sells new for a minimum of $350, some brands very much higher.

Business groups call for Severn tolls cut

Mon, 30 Dec 2013

BUSINESS groups are calling for a reduction in the Severn Bridge tolls as soon as the famous structure comes into public ownership. Following the recent announcement that tolls will be set to increase, the Federation of Small Businesses in Wales and the Freight Transport Association (FTA) have called for the tolls to be reduced to a level that only covers maintenance. In a joint statement the groups expressed their concern for the negative impact the increased tolls could have on the southern Welsh economy.
