Petrol cars twice as likely to fail MOT on emissions
Thu, 07 Nov 2013The latest MOT test data shows that 26.2% of all cars tested fail on excess exhaust emissions – and surprisingly petrol cars fail more than twice as often as diesels in this part of the annual roadworthiness test. According to the official Vehicle Operator and Standard Agency (VOSA) figures, which cover all of 2010 and the first nine months of 2011, 9.7% of petrol cars failed to meet MOT emissions standards compared to just 3.9% of diesels. The re-introduction was confirmed at the new car’s unveiling at the 2014 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit – and it’s great news for us Brits. When the Subaru WRX STi goes on sale in the UK later this year it will cost £28,995 – that’s a whopping £4,000 less than its predecessor.

The M550d xDrive is the so-called ‘Triple-Turbo’ diesel engine we’ve been expecting from BMW for the last couple of years. With 380bhp and a mountain of torque – 520lb/ft or more – we’d expected BMW to fit the engine to the X5 and X6 to create a diesel version of the M cars.
