And the Astra looks like it’s placed itself pretty well. The entry level Astra – the Exclusiv 1.4i – offers 86bhp and comes with AirCon, Stability Control and an MP3 compatible radio/Cd for £15,675.

The new Works option is an aftermarket job for the new Mini; it increases power of the Cooper S to 192bhp and adds numerous styling tweaks. A more powerful Works version, which will be built on the production line and boast more than 210bhp, will be added later, officials promised.

Despite calling the Detroit-bound Volvo XC60 hybrid a concept, it’s clear that the hybrid crossover/SUV is heading for a production model, probably sometime later in 2012. And what better place to showcase a petrol-engined hybrid (the XC60 Hybrid is a petrol-engined hybrid, unlike the diesel-engined V60 plug-in hybrid) than in the US, where diesel is still the fuel of Satan for most?
