European Parliament: electric cars must make noise
Thu, 03 Apr 2014The European Parliament has voted in favour of a European Commission proposal to decrease the maximum allowed noise for new cars, vans, trucks, buses and coaches, in an effort to reduce “vehicle noise nuisance” by 25%. At the same time, the EU has voted in favour of a proposal to force carmakers to fit electric and hybrid electric vehicles with a sound generating device, to improve low speed safety for pedestrians and the visually impaired. Tue, 10 Jan 2012Smart made a splash with its world debut at the 2012 Detroit auto show: its For-Us concept car provides a vision of the Smart as an American icon, a pick-up. The diminutive truck - just 3547mm long - is longer than a Fortwo, and is supposed to be based on the running gear of the next-gen Smart Forfour, aka the new Renault Twingo. So if the For-Us doesn't look so much like a Smart any more, from the front at least, that's why.

We know because Adrian Hallmark – Jaguar’s vocal and opinionated Global Brand Director – said back in December that Jaguar “…need a crossover and we need to stop being a saloon-based company.” And although Adrian has sometimes managed to speak without engaging brain first, what he says should be taken seriously – even if there are perhaps those at JLR who would rather there was a 3 second live delay on Adrian’s musings at times. So the confirmation that an SUV or SAV or Crossover – or whatever you want to call a high-riding Jaguar – is going to happen means we can all speculate on what it will be and what it will look like.
