PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE BIDDING!!

You are bidding on a used set of RECON Truck Accessories LED tail lights for an 07-14 Jeep Wrangler.  They are smoked black (RECON Part Number 264234BK).  They are described by RECON, on its website, as "sold as a set and boast a simple plug-n-play installation" and "better than OEM build quality."

I recently bought these lights directly from RECON for $399.00 (plus $14.99 shipping).

So why am I selling them?  Look at the pictures above of these tail lights installed on my 2012 Jeep Rubicon.  Does something look wrong?

From the day I "plug-n-played" these lights, the left one has only worked intermittently (what may look like a lit vertical strip is just a reflection from the flash).  Sometimes the left one works.  Sometimes not.  In fairness, the tail light is not entirely dark -- for some reason a little red square on the left side stays lit even when the rest of the lamp is pitch black (see the second picture).  As I drive down the road, every few minutes a warning chime sounds and my dashboard displays the error message that my left tail light it out.  Seconds later, it is working again.  This is not as much fun as it sounds.

So I wrote to RECON, and received this response:

"Sounds like you have a resistance issue with that one side. I would wire in a resistor to the positive turn signal lead and that will fix your issue. Let me know if you have any further questions."

Huh?  RECON expected me to "wire in" some unspecified resistor to the turn signal lead on a two year old Jeep?  What happened to "plug-n-play" or that promised "better than OEM" quality?  So I wrote back, explaining that the left tail light was actually dark even when the right one is lit.  I received this response:

"Still sounds like a resistance issue to me. Please send over a digital picture showing what you are describing."

Yes, the good folks at RECON actually asked me to send them a picture of a non-functioning tail light.  RECON, if you are paying attention, see above for a picture of the non-functioning light.  To be fair, I unplugged and re-plugged all of the connections and the light worked for a few hours.  Then it went back to being intermittent.  So I wrote to RECON again and asked for a replacement.  Here is their response:

It is a resistance issue. I would be more than happy to send a resistor out to you. You stated earlier that when you unplugged it and plugged it back in it worked properly. It sounds like the Jeep is improperly reading the resistance again, meaning I can send you out 50 new driver sides and they will all most likely do the same thing. Your particular Jeep needs additional resistance for that one side. What address would you like me to send the resistor to?

Ah .... it's my Jeep's fault.  Must be that lousy OEM build quality.

So here is the deal.  I am listing these lights with a starting price of $1.00.  There is no reserve.  I will ship them for free anywhere in the Continental United States.  Maybe you can get them to work on your Jeep.  Or maybe you can turn them into Christmas tree ornaments.  At this point, I could not care less -- so long as they are not on my vehicle.

Good luck.

Tesla gives away its electric car secrets for free

Fri, 13 Jun 2014

Tesla Elon Musk, the CEO of the pioneering electric carmaker Tesla, has announced that the company is to "open source" all its technology patents in order to speed up the progress of electric car development. In an extraordinary press statement entitled 'All our patents are belong to you' – a reference to online memes and gaming culture, in case you were wondering – Musk has categorically stated that Tesla will not challenge any company that takes advantage of its technology when building rival electric cars.   Tesla gives away electric car technology: will not sue Having recently reviewed the Tesla Model S, this sounds great news for the future of the electric car, but commercial suicide for Tesla as a business.
