CHEVY V-8 SBC AND BBC 65000 VOLT HEI DISTRIBUTOR WITH ACCEL 300+ SERIES WIRE SET. 

THE ACCEL WIRES ARE A PREMIUM GRADE UNIVERSAL SET. THE 300+ SERIES NAME IS NOT INDICATIVE OF THE OHM RESISTANCE. THESE WIRES HAVE A RESISTANCE OF 150 OHMS PER FOOT. THESE WIRES ARE TO BE CUSTOM SIZED FOR USE. 

The Accel 8.8 300+ Series wires are considered a very high end set of wires. As you may know plug wires come in many different quality grades. The 300+ Series are the best Accel offers. These wires sell for right at $100.00 at most retail outlets. The part number for these wires is # 7041 Do a search and you will find these wires to be selling in the price range that is more than were selling the complete HEI distributor and wires for. Having a premium set of wires is very important for proper ignition. Beware of some of the 10mm low grade wires on the market. These knock-off 10mm wires have been found to be inferior in many different ways. They are composed of nothing more than a thick low grade rubber cable. The inside core structure of them is unlike any wire on the market. Many of our competitors are offering these wires with the HEI distributor. Those type wires alone sell for around $29.00 give or take and are pure junk. They capitalize on the large millimeter size, usually around 10mm give or take. Truth is any good quality set of 10mm wires on the market would sell for well over $100.00 When I referred to the low grade 10mm wires as being a knock-off set of wires, I want it to be understood that I don't have anything against so called knock-off products if the quality and value are what it should be. The low grade 10mm wires that are out there are not this way. We have first hand knowledge with these wires, as they were sent to us for evaluation with the hopes of having a decent low cost product to offer our customers. Upon close observation these wires were the worst we had ever seen. The copper spiral windings were micro-thin. There were none of the many layers of protective jacketing that most high quality wires have. The outer rubber jacket is made from a gummy soft rubber that has no resistance to heat. So don't be fooled by these low cost wires with a large mm diamter. The benefits of using a high end set of wires are many. Low quality wires will cause your engine not to perform the way it should, and they degrade in conductivity at a very fast rate as compared to premium wires. The reason we have decided to go with such a high end set of wires with our GM HEI distributors is that most of our customers are running high performance engines, and high end wires are a must.

The reason were able to sell this setup at this is price is that the plug wires are part of our 60% clearance special. If we purchased the wires directly from Accel our wholesale price for the wires alone would be close to what were selling the complete ignition system for. When these wires are gone, there will be no more at this price, not even close to this price. Black is the only wire color available, but see our other listings for a variety of different distributor colors. We also offer this setup with the small base ready to run HEI distributor for those with firewall clearance issues.

We have noticed many others selling the GM HEI distributor and wire kit using brand name wires that are of the low-end line. Most of the major wire companies offer a low end set of wires that retail for any where from around $29.00-$49.00 The wires offered in our HEI kit are the high end series that truly sell for approx. $100.00 The ohm resistance is much lower with our wires than any of the low end wires on the market. The lower the ohm rating=less resistance, the better the performance and the higher the cost. High end wires will also outlast the low end wires. This is a well known fact. So performance and longevity are both to be considered before buying an HEI kit with wires. HEI ignition is far more demanding than point style ignition. Should you want to run an MSD unit with your HEI then these wires are more than capable. 

The Accel 300+ wires are about as good as it gets when it comes to a set of plug wires. The heat resistance of the outer cables is very high, (600 degrees) and the inner cores are made from a copper/nickel alloy. Accel is owned by the Prestolite Performance company, and rest assured these wires are a premium product.

The only true 65K HEI on the market. This is the true original super 65K model with the Super style cap. We have tested our 6500-R unit up to 7000 rpm on an sbc 350 engine that had 13:1 compression ratio, and made 565 hp on the dyno. 7000 rpm is most likely not the max amount, but it was the max amount we wanted to run the engine we tested.

Be sure you have sufficient firewall clearance. This unit is one full inch wider in diameter, and approximately one and a half inches taller compared to a point style distributor. If your car came equipped with an HEI unit then you will not have a problem at all. The firewall tunnel on many GM vehicles allowed space for the HEI unit, but be sure before purchasing. For those that find this unit may not work, we have the oem style HEI unit that has a smaller coil cover, rather than the large flat Super cover this unit has. The oem cover is tapered down on the top sides, and offers much more clearance compared to this model. If the oem HEI unit is still not small enough, than you may need the small base ready to run HEI unit. It has a base and cap the size of an original point distributor, but requires an external coil. The quality of our distributor far exceeds any of the others on the market in our opinion. THIS UNIT WILL FIT MOST ANY CARBURETED V-8 CHEVY ENGINE MADE EXCEPT INDUSTRIAL 366 AND 427 ENGINES. YOU CAN REPLACE YOUR POINT STYLE DISTRIBUTOR WITH THIS. THE DIFFERENCE IN PERFORMANCE IS DRAMATIC TO SAY THE LEAST. 

Installation instructions.

1.    Unpack the distributor carefully and inspect it for possible shipping damage.  Inspect again after removing the cap.

2.    If the distributor to be replaced has not already been removed from the engine, remove its cap.  On GM HEI distributor, unplug the pickup to coil harness from the cap.  Do not remove the plug wire at this time.  Crank the engine slowly until the rotor blade aims a fix point on the engine or firewall.  Note this point for future reference.

3.    Find the connector in the wiring from the distributor to the ignition switch, and unplug it.

4.    Note the exact position of the vacuum advance canister.  Put a reference mark on the engine or firewall so that the new distributor may be easily installed in the same position.

5.    Loosen and remove the distributor hold-down bolt and clamp.  Lift the old distributor out.  If the engine had been running within the past few minutes, the distributor housing may be hot and coated with hot engine oil.  Wrap a shop towel around the distributor to avoid burning your hands and dripping oil.

6.    Lower the new distributor into position.  The rotor should be aimed at the same fixed point as was the rotor of the old distributor, and the vacuum canister aligned with the reference mark.  After the new distributor has been lowered into place, you may find that it hasn’t seated firmly against the support boss.  This indicates that the lower end of the distributor shaft is not properly aligned with the oil pump drive rod.  Do not attempt to force the distributor into position.

7.    Reinstall the hold-down clamp and thread the bolt just enough to exert a very slight pressure against the distributor.  If the distributor was not firmly seated, manually rotate the engine until the distributor drop down into place.

8.    With the distributor properly seated, tighten the hold-down bold just enough so that the distributor is held in place but can still be rotated with a little effort.  Again, make sure that the vacuum canister is aligned with the reference mark.

9.    Remove the plug wires one at a time from the old cap and install them in the corresponding positions of the new one (on GM HEI distributors, it will also be necessary to transfer the coil and coil cover from the old cap to the new one).  After all wires have been transferred, verify that the wire in the terminal post that is aligned with the rotor leads to number one cylinder.  If you are unsure of cylinder number position or firing order, this information can be found in the service manual that covers your particular engine.  Put on the distributor cap.

10. Reconnect the wiring leading from the distributor to the ignition switch.  On GM HEI distributors, plug the pickup lead connector into the new distributor cap.

11. Connect timing light.  Start the engine and allow it to warm up sufficiently to idle smoothly.  It may be necessary to rotate the distributor (either clockwise or counter-clockwise) before a smooth idle can be achieved.  If the engine will not idle smoothly, the firing order may be incorrect or the rotor may not have been properly aligned during installation.  Consult a service manual for corrective procedure.

12. Consult the appropriate service manual to determine the factory-recommended initial timing and idle speed.  Set initial spark timing with the vacuum advance line disconnected and plugged.  Advancing timing two to four degrees from the factory setting will usually provide improved performance and fuel economy.  However, timing advance beyond factory specification may result in detonation, which can cause engine damage.  Listen carefully.  If you hear the engine knocking or pinging, retard initial timing as required to eliminate it.

13 If you are converting from points to HEI, be sure that the your new unit is supplied with a full 12 volt power source. All point systems had a ballast resister that reduced voltage to around 6-8 volts. These resisters were often in the wire harness coming from the starter, and this must be eliminated. Test your power source to be sure your feeding the new HEI unit a full 12 volts. You will also need a spade terminal to tap your power source into the new unit. You can find such terminals at any hardware or auto supply. We have a full line of distributor accessories.

When we rebuild any early model Chevy engine, we insist the customer purchase a new distributor. You will notice a performance difference in your engine if you have any of the above issues with your old distributor. All of the old HEI's we see have excess end play in the shaft. I'm sure the coils on them are not at full voltage. This is much more than the oem model. All car makers have dramatically improved the ignition systems on cars and trucks. This is an indication of how important good ignition is to an engine.

AN INCREASE in the number of used cars coming into the market has “taken the edge off prices” and calmed some corners of the industry, according to used car pricing experts CAP. A greater influx of part-exchange cars arriving at dealers is partly responsible, and with many franchised dealers focusing for the time being on selling those vehicles, competition to acquire stock on the open market has decreased. CAP reports that the pressure has been lifted on some dealers who had become frustrated at how expensive it was becoming to source cars at fair prices.
