Searchlight Azimuth-Elevation Indicator ID-277/AVQ-2, S2 Tracker, P2V NeptuneThis is a Searchlight Azimuth/Elevation Indicator type ID-277/AVQ-2 as used in the Cold War era antisubmarine aircraft Lockheed P2V Neptune and Grumman S-2 Tracker, and Martin P5M Marlin Floatplane of the US Navy. The crewman or co-pilot operated a handgrip to adjust the aim of the externally mounted searchlight, and the azimuth and elevation of the searchlight's beam relative to the position of the aircraft would appear on the indicator. See illustration of the S-2E Tracker instrument panel from its Flight Manual showing the location of the indicator. Measures 3.25 in diameter and ~7in deep. It is clearly 'experienced' but the dial markings are clear and the glass and case are intact. The yellow symbol of Naval Air Station Alameda (CA) is stamped on its side, but the stamped service date is illegible. See photos.

Tue, 25 Mar 2014The facelifted 2014 VW Polo (pictured) is now on sale The 2014 facelift for the VW Polo was revealed back in January and, although the cosmetic tweaks were the usual facelift fodder – tweaked bumpers and grill, new lights, new alloys and interior updates – the big changes came under the bonnet. New 3-cylinder engines arrive for the Polo with two new 1.0 litre petrols with 60PS or 75 PS, two 1.2 litre petrols with 90 or 110PS and and extra 10-PS for the 1.4 litre, which also gets cylinder deactivation. The diesel BlueMotion also gets dropped in favour of a petrol BlueMotion offering 68.9mpg from its 1.0 litre 3-pot and there’s a pair of 1.4 litre diesels with 75 or 90PS replacing the old 1.2 and 1.6 litre diesels.

Thu, 17 Apr 2014The Volvo S60L Plug-in (pictured) heading for Beijing The Volvo V60 Plug-in is already doing good business for Volvo – despite a price tag of £50k – but the V60 plug-in is a diesel hybrid which doesn’t suit all markets. So Volvo are ploughing ahead with a petrol engine based plug-in hybrid with the debut at the Beijing Motor Show next week of the Volvo S60 L Plug-in, a petrol hybrid version of the long wheelbase S60. At first glance the S60 Plug-in looks just like its regular ICE sibling, but under the skin sits a 2.0 litre Drive-E petrol engine with 238bhp and 258lb/ft of torque – which drives the front wheels – and a 68bhp electric motor with 147lb/ft of torque that can drive the rear wheels, which can be recharged in 4.5 hours.
