CAR scoop: BMW and Toyota's joint sports car plot

Fri, 13 Sep 2013

BMW is buddying up with Toyota on an all-new sports car platform, set to underpin the replacements for the Z4, 6-series and GT86. The unlikely collaboration stems from an alliance that began in 2011, where BMW and Toyota agreed to co-develop next-generation lithium ion batteries, and for Toyota to use BMW’s fourpot diesels in its European cars. An engineering team is beavering away on the project, with the clock ticking: the suits want to outline the car’s specification before the end of 2013. It can be more subtle; simply raising awareness or putting the cars in a high-profile role in a popular film or TV show. Just like Aston Martin with James Bond (and Jaguar Land Rover in the new Bond, too) and Volvo with the Twilight franchise, BMW has placed its product in the new Tom Cruise outing – Mission Impossible 4 | Ghost Protocol.

Nissan is hell-bent on taking over the world's taxicab fleets with its NV200 van. First, it invaded New York with a thoughtfully redesigned, nearly luxurious yellow cab, all but ready for its hard-earned medallion (but not quite). It hopes to fare better in London, seeking a place among the 22,000 black cabs that fill the city's streets.
