Beijing motor show: China means (auto) business

By Guy Bird Motor Shows 22 April 2008 05:34 Only a fool wandering around this week's Beijing motor show would still dismiss China as some also-ran automotive market full of rip-off designs and outdated ‘new’ cars based on old Western designs. While all of those clichés were still in evidence at the Chinese auto show, the copycat mentality is much less obvious than even a year ago at last year's Shanghai show. And every western car exec CAR spoke to was in awe of the upward sales trajectory that means China is still the place to do business in 2008.Yes, there are still some odd automotive fish, usually small ‘three-box’ saloon in shape such as the Chinese market only Citroen C-Elysee and the VW Lavida (a Jetta/Bora Plus car with less style).

Howard Hughes’s Lincoln sells for $1 million at Tulsa auction

A 1936 Lincoln Boat Tail Speedster--customized to the personal tastes of Howard Hughes--sold for $1 million at the Leake Car Show & Auction on June 13 in Tulsa, Okla. The head-turning blue and polished aluminum classic was the headliner at a sale that raked in $12.2 million and attracted more than 10,000 people to the three-day event. Bentley has unveiled the New Benley Mulsanne at Pebble Beach - the so-called new 'Grand' Bentley The Bentley Mulsanne has been revealed at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance this afternoon and, thankfully, it looks just how a big Bentley should. And it’s not just a butched up and enlarged version of the Flying Spur – although it 11″ longer than its ‘VW Bentley’ sibling – it is a metamorphosis of the Rolls Royce era legacy Bentley Arnage in to a super luxury saloon to compete headlong with its former siblings from Rolls Royce. Up front the Bentley Mulsanne gets a treatment very reminiscent of the old Bentley Eight litre, with its big round headlights flanked by off-set smaller ones.
