It was installed into a 1927 sedan while the starter of that car was being rebuilt.
The starter was never reinstalled into the 26.
It is 6 volt.

Mystery Mercedes 600 six-door Landaulet heads to auction

One of just 26 built, this example was recently rescued from the state motor pool of an unnamed African country with the consignor unwilling to reveal the car's exact provenance.

It’s disappointing because it has really lost the flair and swoopy style of the new Legacy Concept we saw at the L.A. Auto Show in November, replacing it with a slightly rakish traditional saloon.
