You should regularly maintain your boats shaft sealing material ( gland packing) to avoid costly repair jobs or even more disastarous events.

Regular maintenance for boats stern glands is often overlook and this leads to leakage problems and worse still , damage to the propeller shaft itself

You should regularly change your boats stern gland packing as well as part of a regular maintenance programme . Packings have a set lifespan by the way they are designed to work meaning it does need to be changed  periodically . Once they are past there usuable timeframe they then can actually start to cause problems and damage to your propeller shaft and uncontrolable leakage .  And remember , its all that stands between your boat floating or sinking . So include it in your maintenance schedule.

Packing also becomes embedded with sand and silt particals from the water and these abrade against the shaft like sandpapaer and is also a good reason to change it as part of maintenance, even if its still seems to be going ok as you cant see this type of shaft wear till its too late.

New packing costs little in comparison to what a new shafts and haulout fees will cost. You could end up spending thousands and thousands of dollars in repair costs by not maintaining this important part of your boats drivetrain.

For the cost of what is really only pocket money you can have peace of mind and its also inexpensive enough to carry a spare pack just in case a problem occurs at sea or to have on hand next time you haulout .

What the Future Holds, Nobody Knows

Tue, 22 Dec 2009

It's a testament to the talent, charisma and relative celebrity of Ian Callum, Derek Jenkins and Franz von Holzhausen - heads of Jaguar, Mazda and Tesla design, respectively - that they managed to captivate a crowd of industry insiders at the tail end of the Los Angeles Auto Show's second press-preview day. This despite being given a nebulous topic to discuss with a moderator who knew little about the subject. Dan Lyons, a technology columnist at Newsweek, oversaw the panel discussion that was to focus on "Tomorrow's Cars...Practical Transportation or Groundbreaking Design?" He asked only one question on that topic before digressing into a more general discourse on the design strategies of Jaguar, Mazda and Tesla.

Porsche 911 Turbo S China 10th Anniversary Edition revealed

Mon, 30 May 2011

Porsche 911 Turbo S China 10th Anniversary Edition - celebrating a decade of Porsche in China It must have seemed a slightly optimistic decision when Porsche decided to make its mark in China in 2001 by opening a Porsche Center in Beijing, But it turned out to be a stroke of genius. China is now the second most important market for Porsche with the Stuttgart car maker now shifting almost 14,000 cars a year, a big change from the handful it managed in 2002. Big markets deserve special editions, and with plenty of wealthy individuals in China keen to have something no one else has, the Porsche 911 Turbo S China 10th Anniversary Edition – a moniker which fortunately isn’t written on the boot – will sell out straight away.
