But that’s no surprise when it comes with a very agreeable 270bhp to play with – enough to push the RCZ R to 62mph in 5.9 seconds – good looks and decent economy. Add to that – certainly in the UK – that any profits made on the sale of a classic car you’ve bought for your own enjoyment are tax free, and it’s no shock that values keep rising, and the rarer the car the more they rise. So with only 64 road cars made, the McLaren F1 can be considered a sound investment, with values rising since it first sold in the 1990s for around £640,000 to a new world record auction price set last night of £8.47 million (around £5.42m).

It all started with the Lexus LF-Gh concept at Geneva in the spring – the new GS in Concept guise –  since when our spy photographers have managed to grab shots of a disguised GS out ploughing round the Nurburgring and we’ve had a Lexus boss musing the likelihood of a Lexus GS Coupe – and an official announcement that the GS 350 will arrive at Pebble. Now we get one of the oxymorons of car PR in the internet age – the ‘Official’ Spy Video.
