How To Measure Steering Cables

Controls & Steering > How To Measure Steering Cables

“Measure Twice. Order Once.”

New Installation:

Measure cable routing path from wheel center line to engine connection, as follows:

A = Center line of wheel to gunwale (or deck, if routed downward),
B = Dash to transom,
C = Gunwale to centerline of cable connection at centered tiller.

A single-cable, starboard drive push-pull mechanical cable system is shown in this diagram. If your mechanical system is different than the one depicted and/or you have any questions about mechanical steering after reviewing this guide, please contact Advantage Marine Supply Customer Service at  772-778-2200 or  Email us by using the ebay (ask a question link) located at the bottom of the description page.

Cable routing's (such as those found on pontoon boats) may vary from this drawing. Confirm length by laying a garden hose or similar object) along cable path and measure run from wheel to engine connection point.

For Cable Installations through the Engine Tilt Tube: Add A, B & C + 6", then round up to the next foot. Order that length cable.

For Cables Mounted to the Transom Splashwell or Stringer: Add A, B & C, then subtract 6" and round up to the next foot. Order that length cable.

Replacement or existing Cables :

If possible, find the part number stamped on the plastic jacket of the old cable. If you removed the old cable, measure for the replacement cable as follows:

For Rotary Steering Cable Replacement, Measure Existing Cable as follows: Measure plastic cable jacket (“Y” dimension, shown in above drawing) in inches, add 18”, and round up to next foot. Order that length cable.

For Rack steering Cable Replacement, Measure Existing Cable as follows: Measure plastic cable jacket (“Y” dimension shown in above drawing) in inches, add 30”, and round up to next foot. Order that length cable.

For JBS Jet Boat Cable Replacement, Measure Existing Cable as follows: Measure old cable from tip to tip. (Round up to next foot if needed for whole foot.) Order that length cable.

Spoken street names useful in navigation units, magazine says

Mon, 01 Nov 2010

If you're in the market for a portable navigation unit, features such as spoken street names and reality view/lane assist are worth the money while traffic information, connected services and voice recognition are not as essential, says Consumer Reports magazine. Less expensive navigation models are even offering the service via which the unit will speak the names of streets or highway numbers rather than telling drivers to merge or turn in a specific direction. Reality view/lane assist is a feature commonly packaged as one that displays three-dimensional views of exits, signs and intersections as well as the best lane to be in for upcoming driving maneuvers.

Lexus LF-CC

Mon, 17 Sep 2012

Lexus is set to debut the LF-CC mid-size coupe concept at next week's Paris motor show that will give us a glimpse of the design and technology ideas that will influence the brand's future models. The LF-CC shares a lot of the same design cues featured on the LF-LC 2+2 sports coupe concept seen in Detroit in January, not least the new spindle-shaped grille that are found on all new Lexus models. It is set in a deep, metal-finish surround and is framed by the hood lip, deep lower spoiler and the projecting front wing tips – this is designed to give it a 3D look.

Porsche Panamera – 25,000 built already

Thu, 29 Jul 2010

Porsche has built 25,000 Panamers in the first year of production Big, exotic cars tend not to sell in big numbers. Annual production in the low thousands is usually as much as you’re likely to see from a supercar and once you get to hypercar levels you can be talking single digit annual production. They’re the rules.
