Toyota Motor Corp. has developed a rear-seat airbag that deploys between passengers and will install it on a model to be launched in Japan. The airbag inflates from a fixed, rear-seat center console during side collisions.

Dubbed SportCoupe, the new car offers a unique silhouette and the first seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox in the supermini class. The SportCoupe takes inspiration from the Bocanegra concept, unveiled earlier in 2008 at the Geneva motor show, although it somehow seems to have lost the wow factor of that slinky show special.

Gerry McGovern to head Land Rover Advanced Design

Gerry McGovern has been named Director, Advanced Design for Land Rover, and will be working alongside Geoff Upex, who continues as Design Director for Land Rover. "Gerry is uniquely suited to this role," said J Mays, Ford Motor Company's group vice president of design. "He's already shown the world that he fully understands Land Rover's DNA, having led the team that designed Freelander.
