When servicing or assembling a transmission for standard duty service it is highly unlikely you will ever experience an input shaft failure. For heavy duty or competition use, with over 550 foot pounds of torque, the use of an upgraded input shaft, or input shaft and drum should be a consideration. The locations where the shaft is most likely to fail are usually located at a discontinuity in the shaft. These include the traverse oil holes and the undercuts behind the splines. The undercuts are a byproduct of the OEM manufacturing method of “rolling” the splines. The abrupt change in shape at these locations results in high localized stresses, which can result in component failure. The undercut behind the splines results in a shorter spline overall length, reducing overall spline engagement by 25%. Combine this with the reduced major diameter of the splines and another 10% of engagement is lost. This reduction in spline engagement often results in the input shaft tearing the splines out of the clutch housing. An economical upgrade for naturally aspirated street, strip, or off road vehicles producing up to 1200 horsepower / 750 foot pounds of torque is CK Performance Part # 400CC/ISD1. Proprietary steel billet material is used in the manufacture of this component. The profile of the shaft has been redesigned, including a torsion bar center that vastly improve its power transmission capabilities. The splines are formed on precision CNC gear shaping equipment, eliminating the undercuts behind the splines. Revisions have been made to the oil holes, and an increase in spline length and diameter increase overall spline engagement at the clutch housing over 35%. The shaft receives a specialized heat treat procedure, followed by straightening. The spline and bushing diameters are then precision ground on a CNC grinding machine to strict tolerances.PRICE INCLUDES SHIPPING TO ANYWHERE IN THE CONTINENTAL USA

MSN Cars has already driven the ‘regular’ F-Type Coupe.

Schreyer: More than a designer of products I wish to be an architect of Hyundai's brand image

Tue, 17 Dec 2013

There's no denying Peter Schreyer has been instrumental in turning around Kia's image from a manufacturer of wheeled white goods in a creator of design-led products. Now his attention turns to sister company Hyundai in his role as chief design officer for both companies and his plans are no less ambitious. "More than a designer of products I wish to be an architect of Hyundai's brand image," he told an audience at Hyundai's European headquarters, explaining how his job is not simply 'styling' but communicating the brand's message right down to details such as the seatbelt warning buzzer.
