Th400 Cast Alumnum Intermdiate Clutch Piston on 2040-parts.com
Holtsville, New York, United States
Identify the type of intermediate clutch piston in your TH400 during overhaul. It will be either cast aluminum or stamped steel. Beginning in 1974, GM introduced the stamped steel piston as a cost saving method for most models. After repeat failures it use was discontinued in 1987. The use of the stamped steel piston is less than ideal for any heavy duty or high performance usage. With increased line pressure, it suffers from bowing, bending, deflection and a compromised work surface area where the piston acts on the intermediate clutch pack. This reduces the clutch pack torque capacity, creating performance and durability concerns. Note the narrow work surface of the steel piston compared to the wide work surface of the aluminum type. Simply swapping out the steel piston for this obsolete OEM cast aluminum type will vastly improve intermediate clutch pack torque capacity in all applications.
