Top Fuel Dragsters: Drag Racing's Rear-Engine Revolutionby Steve ReyesIndustry legend and veteran journalist Steve Reyes was there through all of these revolutionary technological changes; he has the photos, anecdotes, quotes, and tales of the era. He discusses it all, including the experimentation that led to incredibly exciting racing and wild mishaps. In general terms, drag racing is the fastest form of motor racing; within drag racing, Top Fuel is the fastest of the classes. Top Fuel has always been the leading class in terms of technology, cost, excitement, and speed. Over the years, technology has changed greatly. What started out as a flathead engine, four wheels, frame rails, and a steering wheel has morphed into technological wonders producing horsepower figures in the thousands and running supercharged nitromethane cars over the quarter-mile in the 4-second range. Over the course of the evolution of these technological developments in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Top Fuelers were making enough horsepower so that sitting directly behind the engine, as the "diggers" did in the 1950s through the 1960s, was recognized as a fairly dangerous proposition for the driver. Any blower explosion or clutch and bellhousing failure occurred directly in the face of the pilot. Teams and engineers developed the rear-engine layout that is still in use today, where the engine sits behind the driver but in front of the rear wheels.Industry legend and veteran journalist Steve Reyes was there through all the technological changes; he has the photos, anecdotes, quotes, and tales of the era. He discusses it all, including the experimentation that led to incredibly exciting racing and wild mishaps. Join him in the pages of this book where he shares all the stories of this incredible racing era. Steve Reyes is the author of previous drag racing photo books and is one of the most noteworthy and respected drag racing photographers in history. From the 1960s-1990s, he was the staff photographer for Popular Hot Rodding magazine and published both new and vintage imagery in every issue. And despite the hope that Mercedes would continue its line of V12 range-toppers in the new SL, we still had our doubts it would happen.

Thu, 30 May 2013The new 2014 BMW X5 – quicker, bigger and more frugal Critics may snipe at the BMW X5′s lack of off-road ability as its Achilles heel, but the truth is that the vast majority of X5 owners will never venture anywhere muddier than a boot sale car park. So the trade-off for a great on-road drive is a small price to pay. So X5 owners – and potential owners – will be pleased to know that BMW hasn’t messed with their winning formula in the new 2014 X5, they’ve just added more of the same.
Acura teases new car headed for New York auto show
Mon, 16 Mar 2009Our friends at Acura are bringing a new car to the New York auto show next month. On Monday, they gave us a little tease--an overhead view of the car, albeit with many details hidden. What we do see in the shot is two door handles, but cut lines for a rear set of doors--possibly rear hinged?
