Up for bid is a vintage 12 cylinder Marelli Magneto MF12.

Stamped on it is: MARELLI TIPO MF12 MILANO N 644.

Application:  I've been told the most famous airplanes to use this were 1927 Macchi 52 and Fiat 12 Cylinder engine airplanes, and it has also been suggested that this type of magneto may have been used on seaplanes used in the famous Schneider Trophy sea plane races in the 1920s. Please do your own research.

Condition: This looks to be in good condition for the age. One of the spark lead terminals is bent and there is a small chip on the cap material surrounding this terminal. Otherwise I don't see any cracks or breaks. It has not been tested, so may need to be rebuilt. It is missing the bottom cap and maybe the contact points. I'm not familiar with magnetos, so please examine pictures carefully. Great piece of history.

Please take a look at the pictures provided. If you have any questions please feel free to ask. If you need more pictures, just let us know. Thanks for looking and good luck bidding!

One Lap of the Web: Who's collecting cars and who's jumping big rigs?

Tue, 11 Mar 2014

-- Hagerty content VP and friend of Autoweek Rob Sass wonders out loud: When the baby boomers put down their auction flags and retire, what will happen to the collector car industry? "Who's going to buy all their cars?" (We will. –Ed.) Who, indeed -- every generation defines, and is simultaneously defined by, its own tastes.

Design Development: KTM X-Bow

KTM is an Austrian motorcycle company. Originally it produced only off-road bikes, but now it also makes ATVs / quads and road orientated machines, all focused on the enthusiast end of the motorbike market - there are no retro-cruisers, scooters or large screened tourers in the KTM range. In the summer of 2005, this hardcore motorbike company, along with their design partner of 14 years, Kiska, embarked on a research project, which within 6 months saw them committed to adding a sports car to their range.
