XL Sportster/Shovelhead "Snorkel" Oval Air Cleaner Backing Plate   (OEM 1977-78)

A fairly rare "snorkel' backing plate.

The "snorkel" plate was used in limited numbers from approximately 1977-78.    As a result, they are often harder to locate.    In fact, this is second example we've seen in the last 5 years, the other presently being offered by a close contact of ours in another listing.  His is more complete, and you may wish to review his listing, user name "amcart."

This one is in generally good condition, but it does have small fractures on the lower right flange bolt hole.   The fractures are preliminary, and we feel this cover can be used, as is, for the near term, but flatwashers should be used to distribute the torque.  However, some builders will wish to strip, repair, grind, then re-paint.

Otherwise, seams look great, and pedestal welds are solid, though we are finding a welding "hot spot" at the base of one pedestal.  We suspect there was a burn through, during construction, and our interpretation is that material was added from the inside to close the burn through hole.    Based on weld quality and patina, we believe it's original to the plate, at time of production.

A nice example, but some fractures are present on the front lower flange hole.

Video: 2014 Jaguar F-Type V8 at speed

Mon, 04 Mar 2013

Sixty years ago, Jaguar test driver Norman Dewis posted a then-world record 172.4 mph flying mile in a Jaguar XK120. The car had no seat and a perspex bubble was fitted over the cockpit to improve airflow. Over last weekend, Jaguar returned to the site of that famous run: Jabbeke, Belgium.

Arsenal stars team up to test new Citroen

Wed, 22 Jan 2014

THE CITROEN C4 Grand Picasso has been run through its paces in a new video featuring some of the stars from Arsenal Football Club. Striker Olivier Giroud, midfield man Santi Cazorla, defensive supremo Per Mertesacker and the safe hands of Wojciech Szczęsny teamed up to headline a football-themed test of the car’s new features. They highlight the wide door and boot openings with a spot of free-kick and goalkeeping practice, before 1.98-metre Mertesacker lies along the length of the available load space with all six passenger seats folded down.
